Ishpeming, MI – January 15th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Hematites Girls High School Basketball team took on the L’Anse Purple Hornets this evening taking victory with a final score of 81-47.

The Ishpeming Hematites Girls took the court this evening defeating the L’Anse Purple Hornets in a strong offensive game Coach Ryan Reichel called a running game. The Hematites girls have tremendous athleticism and Coach Ryan used that to our run the Hornets up and down the court and the strategy paid off with large gains.

The first half of the game started with Madigan johns putting up a 3-pointer, closely followed by Katie Loman with a field goal, pulling ahead 5-0. The girls started their running game and overwhelmed the Hornets in speed and took the first frame lead 17-4. The second frame followed up much like the first, Madigan Johns put up a couple 3-pointers and counted for 21 of the Hematites points on the board with 3 minutes to go on the clock. Ishpeming finished out the half leading 49-25.

Madigan Johns lead the team score in the first half with 24, followed by Katie Loman with 9, the Hematites had only 7 turnovers.

The second half played like the first one for the Hematites. The girls continued their running game on the Hornets and prevented them from closing the point gap, however L’Anse did maintain the gap to prevent a running clock.  The third frame finished out 62-33 Ishpeming.

The final quarter the game was all but finished, the Hornets refused to lay down to Ishpeming and fought tooth and nail, however the Hematites were simply too strong, too fast, and too strategic. Emma Poirie made her first 3-pointer of the game, and Mariah Bertucci contributed to the final score. The Hematites took victory against the Hornets with a final score of 81-47.

All five starters in the game were in double digits scoring tonight, something that has not been seen in a long time. Madigan johns lead the score with 29, followed by Katie Loman with 13, Mariah Bertucci with 12, Mariah Austin and Chloe Sjoholm both with 10.
