Marquette, Michigan – December 2, 2013 – by Kevin Taylor, Lead Pastor at Silver Creek Church in Harvey
Part of the joy of Christmas is giving that perfect gift that someone will really love and enjoy. I commonly resort to asking, “What do you want for Christmas?” Answers range from, “I don’t need anything” to “gift certificates to the local car wash.” Let’s think about that question for a moment. What do you want for Christmas?
If you are just starting out you might find yourself concerned more about car payments, student loans, rent and utilities than you are about what you want for Christmas. You realize that getting in touch with what you really want for Christmas can be an exercise in futility because you are not in a position to do anything about it. The only way you’re getting what you want is if someone else gives it to you!
Everyone has a list of things they would like or they could use but what do you really need? Instead of a gift card to a nice restaurant how about a new sense of joy in place of the anxiety you struggle with? Instead of that new wireless device how about a lasting dose of peace and contentment that will fight off that nagging feeling of emptiness that haunts you?
The question is, “Who is giving out these kinds of gifts this Christmas?” In Luke’s gospel (2:10-11) the angels appeared to the shepherds and said, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy. Today… a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
If you want to learn more about the joy and peace that is found in Jesus, I invite you to attend one of the special services at Silver Creed Church in Harvey this holiday season. “The Gospel According to Scrooge” will be December 14th (6 p.m.) and 15th (10 a.m. and 1 p.m.) Our Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion service will be December 24th at 5 p.m. Hope to see you there!
