Packers Cruise Past RGIII, Redskins 38-20; Head to Cincinnatti Next

The Green Bay Packers

Green Bay, WI –  The Green Bay Packers had something to prove Sunday when they came out against the NFC East Champion Washington Redskins.  Coming off of a tough loss to the San Fransisco 49ers in week one, the Packers kicked off their home schedule with a convincing win that proved that the Packers are still a force to be reckoned with.  The Packers scored 31 straight points to start the game against a reeling Redskins team that has yet to find it’s identity on offense or defense.  Aaron Rodgers had a career day throwing for 480 yards and four touchdowns with an 81% completion percentage.  James Starks also became the first 100-yard rusher in three years, or 45 games, after filling in for rookie running back Eddy Lacy who suffered a concussion during Sunday’s win.

While the statistics show that the Packers once again gave up over 400 yards on defense, the Packers were much improved this week on that side of the ball.  Much of RGIII’s yards came at a time when the Packers were winning 38-7 and throwing the ball was their only chance.  Whether or not this was an improved Packers defense or the Redskins are still searching for their offensive identity, remains to be seen.

The Packers now look onward to an inter-conference match up against the AFC North favorite Cincinnati Bengals.  The Packers secondary will once again be tested by a great number-one receiver in third year standout A.J. Green.  The Packers have struggled this season against other teams’ number one receivers;  letting up a combined 351-yards on 21 receptions between Pierre Garcon & Anquan Boldin.  If the Packers want to win this game, containing A.J. Green will have to be a top priority.
