Ishpeming JV Football Swamps Modeltowners, 42-0

Written by on October 1, 2020

ISHPEMING, MI – The Hematites look to keep their season rolling after a big win vs Marquette last week, the momentum they established would carry over to week two and  the Ishpeming Hematites  would advance to 2-0 after beating Gwinn by the final, 42-0.

Ishpeming would win the coin-toss, deferring to the second half, so the Modeltowners would get the ball to start.

Gwinn would connect early on a big pass play that set them up in the Ishpeming red zone, but the Hematites came to play football. After four great stuffs by the defense, they would force a turn-over and it would be their turn to drive. It would be a bumpy start for Ishpeming offensively, a fumble on the second play of the drive cost them field position and they would punt after a missed throw on third down.

Ishpeming would stand tall yet again on defense, forcing a three-and-out of the Modeltowners. The Hematites would convert their first, first down of the game after a nice Logan Hurkmans end-around for 13-yards.

That would set up a Hunter Smith touchdown as he broke through the line and scampered 53-yards to the house, putting Ishpeming on the board first, 6-0 with 3:58 left in the first.

Gwinn would be in a weird position, they used all three of their first half time outs in the first 10 minutes of the first quarter, leaving them with 14 minutes in the half and no way to stop the ball.

After one quarter, 6-0, Ishpeming.

Ishpeming would get the ball back from Gwinn quickly to start the second, but another fumble in rainy weather gave the ball back to the Modeltowners, unfortunately Gwinn couldn’t convert any offense and the stalemate would continue.

Ishpeming would commit their third fumble of the half to start the drive, again leading to a stall out. After a nice punt, it was Gwinn’s turn to fumble the ball,Gwinn Qb Conner Duprah took a nice shot from behind while dropping back in the pocket, coughing up the ball deep in Gwinn territory for Ishpeming to pick up.

Logan Hurkmans would be the man to capitalize, he would churn out a nice touchdown run from about 15-yards out. The two-point would again be no good, 12-0 Ishpeming with 3:01 to go in the half.

PICK-SIX ALERT, Brayden Bastiste would intercept a wobbly pass and bring it back over 30-yards to the house for the Hematites right before the half, putting Ishpeming up 20-0 after a successful two-point conversion.

Half-time score: Ishpeming 20, Gwinn 0.

Ishpeming would start the second half with the ball, but the fumble-bug bites again and this time Ishpeming would lose the ball, giving Gwinn decent field position to start the second half.

Ryan Maki for Ishpeming wouldn’t give up the first touchdown, he would pick off a bad pass for Ishpeming, and they would start the next drive on the 50. Hunter Smith would complete a dime down to the 9-yard line to start the drive, setting up for….himself as he would cross the line on the next play. Ishpeming would convert the two-point, Ishpeming up 28-0.

It would go from bad to worse for Gwinn, they would try to throw again to start the next possession, but Ryan Maki would come down with his second interception in five plays, bringing this one back to house, 34-0 Ishpeming.

End of three, Ishpeming in full control.

The two side would exchange a few possessions before Brayden Batiste found the end zone for the second time tonight, 42-0 Ishpeming after a two-point conversion. That would be some of the only notable action in the fourth as both teams essentially ran to clock out.

Join Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau next Wednesday as Ishpeming JV Football takes on West Iron County JVs at 6:30, pregame show starts at 6:15 on 98.
