1/13/14 Ishpeming, MI – Highschool basketball isn’t easy. The Hematites and Purple Hornets were both coming off of considerable winning streaks. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau kept you up to date on this fast paced game only on 98.3 WRUP. Although the Hematites played well, the L’Anse Purple Hornets won by two points (58-56).
Ishpeming received the ball to start but they were unable to sink a basket. For the next three minutes, the teams furiously threw shot attempt after shot attempt but neither team scored. The first team on the scoreboard was the Purple Hornets. By the time the Purple Hornets’ called a time out, the Hematites had fallen behind (8-0 L’Anse). Ishpeming finally scored with a free throw before sinking a quick lay up (8-3 L’Anse). The first quarter was riddled with traveling fouls. The Purple Hornets’ easy jump shot brought the score to 10-3 (L’Anse). Recovering slightly from their lack luster first quarter, the Hematites wove in several baskets to bring the score to 10-7 (L’Anse) by the end of the first quarter.
Apparently refocused by the start of the second quarter, the Hematites took their first lead of the game (13-12) within a minute! After a smooth long two by Ishpeming, the Purple Hornets struck back. After a foul and a free throw, the score was 17-16 (Hematites). However, the Hematites lead didn’t last long. Running the ball smoothly down court, the Purple Hornets reclaimed the lead. By halftime, the score was 21-19 in favor of the Purple Hematites.
As the game clock ticked away, the play became more and more intense. However, L’Anse was always one step ahead of Ishpeming through the beginning of the third quarter. After a quick pass and shot, L’Anse was leading 28-21. Then, the Hematites were fouled and cashed in on both of their free throws (28-23 L’Anse). L’Anse was using a strong defense to keep their lead. A big break for Ishpeming came with a smooth three pointer. Dodging Purple Hornets, Ishpeming snuck in another basket (41-36 Purple Hornets). A full court pressure by the Hematites in the last minute of the third resulted in a score of 41-38 (L’Anse) by the end of the third.
Two successful free throws brought the game dangerously close with only four minutes left on the clock (48-44 L’Anse). The Purple Hornets were determined to keep their narrow lead. Sinking several baskets, the Purple Hornets soon brought the score to 53-46 (L’Anse). The Hematites weren’t about to give up though. After a dash for the basket, Ishpeming attempted a shot but it was slightly off. They were fouled, though, and sunk both of their ensuing free throws (54-50). The Hematites used the last of their time outs to make a comeback with only seconds left in the fourth (58-54 L’Anse). Ishpeming came up just short at the end of the fourth quarter with a final score of 58-56 (L’Anse).
