Written by on January 14, 2014

1/14/14, Marquette MI – The determination of both these  tough teams kept the battle raging. However, the Redmen powered through the last half of the game to win 57-41. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau described every play only on 98.3 WRUP.

As the game started, both team’s defense kicked in to block shots and steal balls. The Redmen took the lead and Ishpeming  countered with a man to man defense. The Hematites put their name on the scoreboard by cashing in on a rebound (8-2 Marquette). Then, Marquette’s offense showed off their fine tuned skills with a three pointer. Slipping around several Redmen, Ishpeming positioned for a lay up (11-8 Marquette). The Redmen sunk several more baskets before the first quarter ended with a score of 16-10 (Marquette).

After a debatable start for the second quarter, the Hematites received the ball. The Redmen pulled ahead, easily passing the 20 point mark (21-12 Marquette). Catching up to the Redmen with an arrow straight three pointer, Ishpeming reclaimed a competitive position. In an exciting turn of events for the Hematites, a two pointer allowed them to take their first lead of the night! However, the Redmen took back their lead just in time for halftime (28-27 Marquette).

A long two started the third quarter well for the Redmen. Pulling ahead for a 10 point game, the Redmen prevented the Hematites from scoring for several minutes (37-27 Marquette). The Redmen sunk several more baskets before the Hematites could take control again. By the time the quarter ended, Marquette had gained a substantial lead (46-32).

The Hematites slowly started to make up their deficit (48-35). Then, Ishpeming stepped up to the foul line for three free throws (50-38)! However, with three minutes left in the fourth, the Redmen stil had a major lead (52-38). Several successive fouls didn’t help to  improve Ishpeming’s standings. Calling their last time outs, the teams rallied for the final plays. The Redmen managed to stay ahead through the last minute ending the game with a score of 57-41 (Marquette).

The Hematites played a strong game, but the Redmen stayed one step ahead. Don’t miss the Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team as they battle the Gwinn Modeltowners on Thursday January 16th!
