Ishpeming Hematite Girls Basketball -Ishpeming Hematites (42) VS Westwood Patriots (51) on 98.3 WRUP 1/23/14

1/23/14 – Westwood, Michigan – There may have been no school today but there definitely was basketball tonight, Hematite basketball.  Tonight the Hematite girls traveled to Westwood to take on the Patriots. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were there and brought you all the exciting “play by play” action on 98.3 WRUP.  This was the second time the teams met each other this season, last time was in Ishpeming.  With both teams knowing what to expect from each other they were prepared both mentally and physically for a high energy game.

The game started off with Westwood winning the jump ball.  Westwood posted three points on the board to set the pace.  Both teams utilized quick feet and good passing.  The Patriots put on the full court press but the Hematites were able to make a nice shot (3-2, Patriots).  Westwood was able to make a three point bucket making the score 6-2, Patriots lead.  Westwood continued with a “press like” defense as the Hematites continued to make various shot attempts.  Both teams battled back and fourth using tough defense and strong offense.  The Hematites made a nice three point shot from the top of the point but the Patriots answered back with a basket of their own to keep the lead (8-5, Patriots).  After staying with stubborn shot attempts Ishpeming was able to sink the ball in and go to the free throw line.  Ishpeming was unable to make the free shot, but still had the basket to close the lead to 8-7, Patriots lead.  The energy remained high for the girls.  Westwood went to the free throw line and was able to make one in and then scored another bucket keeping the lead at 11-7.  However, Ishpeming posted one in “off the high glass” to close the Patriot lead, but in retaliation the Patriots made a “big” three point shot keeping their lead at 14-9.  The quarter continued with high energy from both teams. The quarter ended with a score of 16-9 the Patriots in the lead.

Ishpeming started the second quarter with the ball in their hands.  The Hematites got a chance at the free throw line but were unable to score.  Both teams were amped up with energy and determination.  The Hematites had determination to take the lead and the Patriots had determination to keep their lead.  Ishpeming got a chance at the free throw line and were able to make both shots closing the lead to 16-11, with the Patriots remaining ahead. Ishpeming continued to push their defense against the Patriots however, Westwood was able to make two more baskets opening their lead to 20-11.  Ishpeming returned to the free throw line for a 1:1 attempt and was able to make both baskets dropping the Patriot lead to seven points at 20-13.  Westwood got their turn at the free throw line in return and was able to make one free shot.  The Hematites made a “big” shot from “right down the middle” making the score 21-15, Patriots lead.  Westwood then decided to push forward on a tough drive, made the basket and then ended up at the free throw line, making the free throw (24-15, Patriots).  As the clock ran down the half both teams fought hard with a goal to sink more baskets.  The Hematites got to return to the free throw line again and were able to make both shots changing the score to 24-17 with the Patriots maintaining their lead.  Ishpeming utilized great passing and had great shot attempts but could not make any more buckets as the quarter winded down.  The half ended with a score of 24-17, Westwood keeping their lead.

The second half started off with Westwood sinking a “long” two off the bat.  However Ishpeming came back with a “sweet” lay up of their own (26-19, Patriots).  Both teams continued to attempt post a bucket or two.  The Hematites got fouled off of a shot and got a chance at the free throw line and was able to make one free throw.  Westwood continued to push Ishpeming by making a few buckets but the Hematites were not about to back down.  The score became 30-24 with the Patriots in the lead.  Both teams continued to battle back and forth with bound determination using good passes and having various shot attempts.  The energy remained high as the Hematites were able to make a nice jump shot (32-26, Patriots).  Westwood got to return to the free throw line and was able to make both shots increasing the score to 34-26.  The Patriots utilized the full court press against the Hematites.  The Hematites fought back against the press and were able to make a NICE “running” jump shot (34-28, Patriots).  However Westwood sunk another basket and returned to the free throw line again changing the score to 37-28, and continuing to keep the lead.  The Hematites dropped the lead to seven again after posting two more free throws.  As the quarter approached the end the Hematite girls continued with energy and determination, not giving up.  The quarter ended with a score of 37-30, Patriots still in the lead.

The fourth quarter started with both teams making quick shot attempts.  The Hematites threw a great “block out” after Westwood attempted to make a three pointer and was unsuccessful.  The energy continued to remain high as Westwood utilized a zone defense against the Hematites.  The Hematites attempted a three pointer of their own, but could not make it in.  The Patriots fielded an Ishpeming rebound and took it down court for a lay up and sunk it (39-30, Patriots).  Ishpeming continued with bound determination to make some baskets as the final quarter continued to be counted down, the clock was the Hematite’s new enemy.  The score became 41-32 after the Patriots got to shoot some free throws and the Hematites posted another nice “running” jump shot.  Westwood returned to the free throw line again with two minutes left and was able to make both throws but Ishpeming countered with a nice bucket of their own (43-34, Patriots).  The Hematites sunk a nice lay up and then scored another “big” shot and then returned to the line to close the Patriot lead to 43-38.  The Patriots were able to sink three more free throws to add two more points to their lead (46-38).  The Hematites posted a nice three pointer from “right down Division street”.  The score became  51-42 after both teams were able to post up more shots.  The energy of the game continued up to the sound of the game ending buzzer.  The Patriots won with a final score of  51-42.  Nice try Hematites!!!
