Ishpeming Hematites (39) Girls Basketball Districts vs. Gwinn Modeltowners (56)

Gwinn, MIMarch 4th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Gwinn Modeltowners in the first round of the Mid-Peninsula Conference District Tournament tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!

The Hematite’s struggled offensively early in the game, with only Kaylee Engler and Jessica Spencer scoring in the first quarter. The two combined for 10 points, and the Hematites trailed 10-17 after the first quarter.

The second quarter began with the Modeltowners scoring 9 straight points, until Khora Swanson hit a jumpshot to make it 12-26. Spencer had two free throws and Engler made a field goal to make it 16-34 going into halftime.

The third quarter looked equally upsetting for the Hematites, with the Modeltowners scoring the first 4 points to make it 16-38. The Hematites then scored 8 straight points behind Spencer and Engler to make it 24-38 with 3:42 left in the quarter. The Hematites chipped away at the Gwinn lead, but with every basket they scored, Gwinn returned the favor. Despite 11 points from Spencer in the third quarter alone, the Hematites still trailed 32-48 going into the final quarter.

The Hematites fought hard throughout the fourth quarter, but they weren’t able to close the gap. The Hematite Girls lost the District Playoff Game 39-56.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Jessica Spencer who had 22 points, as well as Kaylie Engler who put up 14 points. The Hematites finish the season with a 17-4 record, and the Mid-Peninsula Conference championship.

Tonight was the final game for the Senior’s on the team. Congratulations to Brianna Aho, Tammy Simula, Cheyanne Wedgworth, Morgan Skytta, Kaylie Engler, Jessica Spencer, and Lindsey Thompson for all of their careers playing in Ishpeming!
