Ishpeming Hematites (78) Girls Basketball vs. L’anse Purple Hornets (35)
Ishpeming, MI – February 16th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the L’anse Purple Hornets at home tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
The Hematites won the tipoff, but L’anse scored the first basket of the game. Jessica Spencer got the Hematites on the board with a jumper, followed by Kaylie Engler scoring in the post on the next possession. Tammy Simula put in a free throw, followed by Engler scoring on a putback to make it 7-2. Spencer continued the 10 point run with a 3-pointer, and L’anse ended the run with a jumpshot to make it 10-4. L’anse scored 3 straight points until Brianna Aho hit a jumper, followed by a 3-pointer from L’anse to make it 12-10. With just under 2 minutes left Khora Swanson picked up an offensive rebound, and got the ball into Marissa Maino’s hands, who scored a layup to make it 14-10. Morgan Skytta was the 6th Hematite to score in the first quarter, hitting a 3-pointer for Ishpeming. Spencer hit 2 free throws on the next possession to make it 19-10 with less than 30 seconds. Maino got a rebound and went coast-to-coast, scoring to make it 21-10 going into the second quarter.

L’anse scored on the first possession of the second quarter, and Lindsey Thompson scored for Ishpeming on the next possession. Thompson scored again on the next Ishpeming play with a running jumpshot. Simula scored for Ishpeming and Engler scored 7 in the quarter during an 11 point run for the Hematites to make it 32-12 with 4:29 left in the half. Maino hit a 3-pointer with less than 2 minutes left in the half to make it 37-14. Khora Swanson hit a 3 with less than 30 seconds left, and the Hematites lead 40-17 going into halftime.

The Hematites gave up 5 straight points to start the second half, until Spencer hit a 3 to make it 43-22 with 6 minutes left in the quarter. On the next possession Engler hit a deep 2-pointer, followed by a layup by Spencer to make it 47-22. Brianna Aho and Jessica Spencer both scored 6 points in the quarter, and the Hematites had a comfy 60-28 lead going into the final quarter.

Engler started the fourth quarter with a 6 point run by herself to make it 66-28. After a Lindsey Thompson basket, Engler scored again to make it 70-30. Hailly Thompson got on the scoreboard with a putback shot to make it 72-33 with less than four minutes left. The Hematites held on to win the game 78-35.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Kaylie Engler, who had 23 points and 7 rebounds. Jessica Spencer had 14 points and 7 rebounds for the Hematites. Marissa Maino had 9 points and lead the team in rebounding with 10 rebounds.
