Ishpeming, MI – February 19th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Escanaba Eskimos at home tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
The Hematites lost the tipoff and watched Escanaba get the first points of the game taking an early 2-0 lead. A free throw by Tammy Simula got the Hematites on the board, and Escanaba scored again. A fast break layup by Marissa Maino was followed by a 3-pointer from Maino to give the Hematites a 6-4 lead with 2 minutes left in the first quarter. Khora Swanson scored for the Hematites in the paint, and Maino had 3 more points among a 10 point run to give the Hematites a 11-4 lead. Maino hit a free throw (her 9th point of the quarter) to give the Hematites a 12-4 lead after the first quarter.

The Eskimos scored 4 straight points to start the second quarter and cut the Hematites lead to 12-8. Then Kaylie Engler made two free throws, followed by another Eskimo basket. Jessica Spencer got in the scoring column when she picked up an offensive rebound and scored to make it 16-10. After Escanaba scored 4 straight, Spencer made a layup off an inbound pass making it 18-14 halfway through the quarter. Spencer kept the points coming for the Hematites with a jumpshot, followed by a 3-point play to make it 23-16. Spencer would score again, and Tammy Simula made a free throw to give the Hematites a 26-22 lead going into halftime. Escanaba’s Michelle LaFave had 20 of the Eskimos’ 22 points in the first half.

Escanaba scored 7 straight points to start the second half and take the lead back from the Hematites. Spencer broke the Hematites drought with a deep jumper to make it 28-29. Maino scored on a drive to the basket and Engler hit two free throws to make it a 1 point game, and a turn around jumper by Spencer gave the Hematites a 34-33 lead. After Escanaba scored 5 straight, a jumper by Maino followed by a 3-pointer to give the Hematites a 39-38 lead going into the fourth.

Escanaba scored 4 straight points to take the lead back from the Hematites in the start of the fourth quarter. Engler scored on a catch and shoot layup to make it 41-42,and scored on the next possession to give the Hematites a 1 point lead. After an Escanaba 3-point play, Swanson had a 3-point play of her own to take a 46-45 lead. Two free throws from Engler was matched by a 3-point play from Escanaba to tie the game at 48. Spencer untied the game with a jumper to make it 50-48 with 3:19 left. Escanaba then took a 50-51 lead, until 4 straight points from Spencer made it 54-52 with 1:45 remaining in the game. Escanaba tied the game up at 54, and then Spencer scored again, and Ishpeming stole the ball with less than 30 seconds left.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Jessica Spencer who had 25 points, including 10 points in the final quarter. Marissa Maino had 16 points, and Kaylie Engler scored 10 points with 7 rebounds in the win. Escanaba was lead in scoring by Michelle LaFave who had 36 points for the Eskimos.
