Ishpeming, MI – February 6th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the #1 ranked Iron Mountain Mountaineers in Ishpeming tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
After a scoreless 3 minutes to start the game, Iron Mountain had the first basket to take an early lead. Luke Kuliu scored on a deep jumper, followed by Travis Fredy basket off an assist from Ozzy Corp. Another jumper from Kuliu and a layup from Thomas Finegan made it 8-2, and neither team would score before the next quarter.

Ozzy Corp hit a 3 on the first play of the second, and Iron Mountain responded with a 3 of their own to make it 11-5. Ishpeming built a 16-7 lead when Ozzy Corp made two free throws halfway through the quarter. Iron Mountain scored on the next two possessions, then Fredy and Corp both scored, giving Ishpeming a 20-13 lead. Ishpeming would score 4 straight points courtesy of Finegan and Fredy, taking a 24-13 lead. Finegan scored again on a 3-point play to take a 27-13 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers scored first in the second half, but Fredy and Kuliu both scored to stretch the Hematites lead to 31-15. After three straight baskets from Iron Mountain, Kuliu scored twice straight in the paint to make it 35-21 with a minute left. Iron Mountain would score again before the end of third quarter.

The fourth quarter started with a 3-pointer from Iron Mountain to cut the Hematites lead to 9 points. After a free throw and another 3-pointer for Iron Mountain, it was 35-30 with 6:56 left. Fredy scored on an assist from Kuliu to stretch the Hematites lead back to 7. Luke Kuliu scored on a layup, followed by an Iron Mountain basket, and then Kuliu had a 3-point play to make it 42-32. Iron Mountain went on an 8 point run, making it 42-40 with 2:43 left. Nick Comment had two clutch free throws, making it 44-40. A free throw by Iron Mountain followed by a free throw by Kuliu made it 45-41 with one minute left. Iron Mountain scored to make it a 2 point game, but free throws from Fredy helped seal the game for Ishpeming, who won 48-45.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Luke Kuliu, who had 16 points, and Travis Fredy who scored 14 in the win. Thomas Finegan had 9 and Ozzy Corp scored 7 points for Ishpeming.
