Ishpeming Hematites (43) Boys Basketball at Marquette Redmen (46)
Marquette, MI – February 17th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the Marquette Redmen in Marquette tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
Ishpeming won the tipoff, but Marquette scored the first basket when Vejas Grazulis scored in the post. Luke Kuliu put Ishpeming on the board with a 3-pointer, and then found Ozzy Hakkarinen in the post on the next play to make it 5-2. Marquette’s Brett Beauchamp hit a 3-point shot, and then Ozzy Corp hit a jump making it 7-5. Thomas Finegan hit a jumper, followed by another Grazulis basket for Marquette. Corp and Kuliu each scored again for the Hematites, and the Hematites lead 13-11 going into the second quarter.

The Redmen tied the game up on their first possession with Grazulis scoring in the post. Kuliu then hit 3 straight jumpers for the Hematites, who lead 19-16. Kuliu scored again on a putback shot with less than 2 minutes left, followed by Corp scoring in the paint to make it 23-20. On the next play Finegan hit a 3-pointer, followed by a 3-pointer by Hakkarinen to make it 29-21 going into halftime.

Nick Comment scored on the first possession of the third quarter, and Corp scored on the next play to make it 33-21. Finegan drove to the basket and scored on the next possession. Later in the quarter Ozzy Corp hit a 3-pointer to make it 38-22. Grazulis hit a 3 for Marquette, then Finegan scored again to make it 40-25 going into the final quarter.

The Hematites went scoreless for the first half of the final quarter, with the Redmen cutting the Hematites lead to 40-32 with 4:12 left. Finegan had 2 clutch free throws, followed by another Marquette basket to make it 42-34. Marquette continued to chip away at the Ishpeming lead, with a 3-point play by Mahoski making it 42-39. After a free throw by Finegan, the Redman hit a 3-pointer to make it 43-42 with 1:55 remaining. The Redmen ended up taking a lead behind 4 straight free throws. The Hematites had an opprotunity to tie the game at the buzzer, but didn’t get a shot off in time. The Hematites lost 43-46.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Luke Kuliu, who had 13 points. Thomas Finegan had 12 points, and Ozzy Corp had 11 points for the Hematites.
