Ishpeming Hematites (38) Girls Basketball at Gwinn Modeltowners (37) In Overtime
Gwinn, Michigan – February 4th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Gwinn Modeltowners in Gwinn tonight, in an exciting game that went into overtime! Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you all the action on 98.3 WRUP & WRUP.com!
The action began with Gwinn scoring the first two baskets, with Marissa Maino getting the Hematites on the board with two free throws to make it 2-4. After another Gwinn basket, Jessica Spencer hit two 3-pointers in a row to take an 8-6 lead. A basket by Gwinn’s Lawrence tied the game, and a free throw from Spencer followed by another Gwinn basket made it 9-10. Ishpeming took the lead back when Maino hit 2 free throws, bringing an 11-10 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter began with Gwinn going on a 6 point run to take a 11-16 lead with 6 minutes left. Gwinn scored again with 3:58 left, and Ishpeming took a timeout to regroup after a scoreless half-quarter. Lindsey Thompson hit a set 3-pointer to give Ishpeming their first points of the quarter. Jessica Spencer scored in the post off of a nice pass from Kaylie Engler to make it 16-18 with 1:45 left in the quarter. Marissa Maino tied the game with a drive to the basket, followed by another 3-pointer from Jessica Spencer to give Ishpeming a 21-18 lead going into halftime.

The Hematites extended their halftime lead on the first play of the third quarter with Kaylie Engler scoring to make it 23-18. Gwinn scored later in the quarter, and Ishpeming held a 23-21 lead with 4 minutes left in the quarter. Gwinn scored another basket, and Marissa Maino hit a jumpshot right before the end of the third quarter to take a 27-23 lead into the final quarter.

Gwinn scored the first two baskets of the final quarter to tie the game, until Jessica Spencer had a 3-point play to give Ishpeming the 30-27 lead with 4:23 left. After a Modeltowner free throw, the Hematites burned a couple minutes off the clock, before Spencer scored to make it a 4-point game. Gwinn’s Olsen hit a 3-pointer on the next play, making it 32-31 with 1:39 left. Kaylie Engler hit 2 clutch free throws to make it 34-31, and a Gwinn player was fouled on a made layup, making the free throw to tie it with 18 seconds left. Kaylie Engler missed a potential game winner and the game went into over time.

Tammy Simula got her first points at the free throw line in overtime, and Gwinn hit 2 free throws on the other end to tie the game at 36. Gwinn took the lead with 1:20 with a free throw to make it 36-37. Kaylie Engler picked up an offensive rebound and was fouled, making a free throw to tie it at 37. Ishpeming held for the final shot of regulation, but Jessica Spencer was fouled with 10 seconds left. Spencer missed the first shot, but made the second. Gwinn missed a final shot at the buzzer, and the Hematites held on for the win, 38-37.

The Hematites were lead by Jessica Spencer, who had 18 points and 4 rebounds. Marissa Maino had 8 points and Kaylie Engler had 7 for Ishpeming in the win.
The Ishpeming Hematites girls team will play against the Gladstone Braves in Gladstone on Tuesday, February 10th, at 7:30p on 98.3 WRUP.
