Ishpeming Hematites (65) Girls Basketball at L’anse Purple Hornets (31) 1/19/15
L’anse, Michigan – January 19th, 2015 – The 7-1 Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the L’anse Purple Hornets in L’anse tonight! Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you all the action live on 98.3 WRUP & WRUP.com!
Ishpeming got on the board with Tammy Simula scoring 2 free throws to tie the game at 2, after L’anse scored the first field goal of the game. The Purple Hornets hit a 3-pointer, followed by a layup on the next play to make it 2-7 L’anse. Another Simula free throw and a jumpshot by Kaylie Engler made it 5-9 with 4:39 left in the quarter. L’anse scored twice more to take the 5-14 lead after another 3-pointer from the baseline. Jessica Spencer scored on a putback shot to make it 7-16, and L’anse scored next to make it 7-18. Jessica Spencer scored again before the end of the quarter to make it 9-18 with Ishpeming trailing.

The second quarter started with the Purple Hornets scoring on the first possession to extend their lead to 9-20. Marissa Maino scored on a nice drive to the basket to make it 11-20. Jessica Spencer continued the run with a 3-pointer, followed by 2 free throws from Kaylie Engler to make it 16-20. On the next play, Marissa Maino threw a great pass to Tammy Simula, who missed the layup, but then Jessica Spencer put the ball back up and in to cut the deficit to 2 points with 3 minutes left in the half. Jessica Spencer scored again on the next possession to tie the game at 20. Ishpeming got their first lead of the night when Marissa Maino scored, followed by a Tammy Simula layup off a steal to make it 24-20. L’anse scored their second basket of the quarter, with Ishpeming going into halftime with a 24-22 lead. Ishpeming outscored L’anse 15-4 in the quarter.

The Hematites started the second half strong with Kaylie Engler hitting a 3-pointer on the first play of the 3rd quarter. After L’anse hit a 3-pointer on the other end of the court, Morgan Skytta scored on a break-away layup after stealing the ball on defense, giving Ishpeming the 29-25 lead. Jessica Spencer scored on the next play to make it a 6 point Ishpeming lead. After a Tammy Simula free throw, Jessica Spencer hit a 3-pointer, and then Marissa Maino hit a 3-pointer on the next play to give Ishpeming a 38-25 on a 11 point run. Ishpeming kept the run going with Khora Swanson and Jessica Spencer both scoring to make it 42-25. L’anse scored for the second time of the quarter with a minute left to make it a 42-27 game going into the final quarter.

The Hematites continued their run in the final quarter, with Jessica Spencer getting a rebound on defense and taking it to the basket, and then scoring on the next possession to make it 46-27. On the next possession Morgan Skytta scored and was fouled, making the free throw to give Ishpeming a 22 point lead. Jessica Spencer scored on the next play to continue the 9 point run by Ishpeming. After the Purple Hornets finally got on the board again, Kaylie Engler made a 3 pointer to make it 54-29 with 4 minutes left. Morgan Skytta scored a 3-pointer, and then Jessica Spencer scored twice to give the Hematites a 61-29 lead. Hailly Thompson and Marissa Maino would both score before the end of the game, and the Hematites won 65-31.

Ishpeming was lead in scoring by Jessica Spencer, who scored 28 points and had 8 rebounds in the victory. Kaylie Engler scored 10 points, and Marissa Maino put up 9 points and 4 rebounds for the Hematites. Tammy Simula scored 6 points, and Hailly Thompson and Khora Swanson both contributed 2 points in the win.
The Hematites also won the JV game by a score of 38-30.
The Ishpeming Hematites girls team will play at home against the Manistique Emeralds on Friday, January 23th at 7:30p on 98.3 WRUP.
