Iron Mountain, Michigan – January 15th, 2015 – The 6-1 Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Iron Mountain Mountaineers in Iron Mountain tonight! Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you all the action live on 98.3 WRUP & WRUP.com!
Ishpeming scored the first baskets of the game when Jessica Spencer scored at the 6:00 mark in the quarter, followed by Kaylie Engler scoring 2 points at the free throw line. Brianna Aho and Jessica Spencer both scored around the 2:00 mark to give Ishpeming a 10-3 lead, and after the Mountaineers scored twice at the free throw line, the Hematites went into the second with a 10-5 lead.

Tammy Simula and Lindsey Thompson both scored early in the second quarter, but an Iron Mountain run made it a 14-12 game with 5 minutes left in the quarter. Iron Mountain hit a 3-pointer to give the Mountaineers the 1 point lead. The Hematites quickly took the lead back when Marissa Maino made a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 17-15 Ishpeming. The Hematites then went on a 5 point run behind a basket by Kaylie Engler and a 3-pointer off the glass for Marissa Maino. Khora Swanson made two free throws with 1:20 left in the half to make it 25-15. After an Iron Mountain basket, Tammy Simula hit a 3-pointer to make it 28-17 at halftime.

The second half began with Kaylie Engler scoring in the paint, followed by Iron Mountain’s Katie Brule scoring to make it 30-19. Engler scored all of the third quarter points for Ishpeming until Khora Swanson hit a 3-pointer with 2 minutes left, and Jessica Spencer scored on the next play to make it 38-20 Ishpeming.

Iron Mountain Mountaineers: 24
On the first play of the fourth quarter Iron Mountain had an unusual 4 point possession when an off-ball foul happened while a shot was made, giving them 2 free throws with the field goal. Iron Mountain got another basket to cut the lead to 8, but then Jessica Spencer scored, followed by Kaylie Engler hitting 2 free throws to make it 42-30. An Iron Mountain 3-pointer was followed by Morgan Skytta making 2 free throws. Iron Mountain then scored 5 straight to make it 44-38. Kaylie Engler responded on the next possession with a 3-point play to give the Hematites a 47-38 lead. Iron Mountain fought back, getting as close as 49-44, but then Kaylie Enler had another 3-point play to make it 52-44 with 2:30 left. Ishpeming spent a lot of time at the free throw line in the last quarter, making 19 free throws in the fourth quarter alone, and holding on for a 63-48 win.

Ishpeming Hematites were lead in scoring by Kaylie Engler, who had 18 points and 8 rebounds. Khora Swanson had 11 points for the Hematites, and Marissa Maino had 10 points as well as 6 rebounds in the win. The Hematites shot 31.4% from the field.
The Hematites also won the JV game, 65-24.
The Ishpeming Hematites girls team will travel to L’anse to take on the L’anse Purple Hornets on Monday, January 19th at 7:30p on 98.3 WRUP.
