Gladstone, MI – January 27, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the Gladstone Braves in Gladstone tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
The Ishpeming Hematites won the tipoff and scored on the first play when Ozzy Corp took it to the basket. Gladstone missed a shot on the other end, and then Thomas Finegan hit a 3-pointer for the Hematites. Ozzy Hakkarinen hit a free throw to make it 6-0 with 6 minutes left in the first quarter. On the next Ishpeming possession Thomas Fredy picked up an offensive board and scored. Both teams went scoreless until 3 minutes until Gladstone got on the board on a Justin Jurek jumper, and on the next play Ozzy Hakkarinen scored to give Ishpeming the 10-2 lead. Gladstone scored again and then Travis Fredy scored under the basket, making it 12-4. After Gladstone scored 3 points to cut the lead to 5, Ozzy Corp hit a 3-pointer to make it 15-7 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter started like the first ended, with Ozzy Corp hitting a 3-pointer for the Hematites. On the next possession Ozzy Hakkarinen hit a deep 2-pointer to give Ishpeming the 20-7 lead. After a Gladstone basket, Ozzy Hakkarinen scored on a layup, followed by a 3-pointer from Gladstone’s Ben Schwalbach. Gladstone scored again when Andrew Olesak drove to the basket, and Schwalbach made another 3, making it a 22-17 Hematites lead. The Gladstone run continued with a 3 by Jurek, closing the Hematites lead to 2 points. Both teams scored back and forth, and then Luke Kuliu scored to make it 26-22. Two free throws by Jake Peterson for Gladstone right before the halftime made it 26-24

The second half began with Corp scoring on a putback after missing a shot of his own. On the next possession Hakkarinen was fouled and made both free throws to make it 30-24. Travis Fredy had a big block on defense on the next play, and then got to the foul line on offense, making a free throw and giving the Hematites a 31-24 lead. Fredy scored again with a 3-pointer to make it 34-24 with 3:30 left in the quarter. Luke Kuliu continued the Hematites 10-0 run with a drive to the basket. Gladstone got their first point of the quarter with less than 2 minutes left at the free throw line. After a jumpshot by Ozzy Hakkarinen, Gladstone scored in the paint to make it 38-27. On the next play Kuliu got his own rebound and made a hook shot with 40 seconds left in the quarter, taking a 40-27 lead into the final quarter.

Ozzy Corp hit another 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter, and Gladstone’s Schwalbach hit a 3 to make it 43-31. Hakkarinen and Corp both scored to make it 47-31, followed by a 4-point play by Schwalbach to make it 47-35 with 5:30 left. Gladstone’s Jake Peterson scored, followed by two free throws from Corp and one by Dominic Suardini to make it 50-37 with 3:52 left. Olesak scored for the Braves on a putback, and Travis Fredy made a jumper for Ishpeming to make it 52-39. Tyler Wells hit 2 free throws for the Braves, then Corp and Finegan eachhit 2 free throws for the Hematites, making it 56-41 with less than 3 minutes left. After a Gladstone 3-pointer, Hakkarinen and Finegan each made a free throw, and Gladstone scored again to make it 58-46. The Hematites would secure the win at the free throw line, leaving Gladstone with a 63-46 victory

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Ozzy Corp, who had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Hematites. Ozzy Hakkarinen had 13 points and Travis Fredy scored 10 points with 8 rebounds. Luke Kuliu and Thomas Finegan both scored 6 points in the victory. Ben Schwalbach lead the Braves in scoring with 15 points.
Ishpeming lost the JV game 39-50.
