Ishpeming Hematites (51) Girls Basketball at Norway Knights (36) On WRUP 98.3FM and WRUP.com 1/8/15
Norway, Michigan – January 8th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Norway Knights in Norway tonight! Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you all the action live on 98.3 WRUP & WRUP.com!
The game started with ball in Norway’s possession, but the first points of the game were Ishpeming’s, with a free throw by Tammy Simula, followed by field goals by Kaylie Engler and Jessica Spencer to jump to a quick 5-0 lead. Norway scored on a fast break layup, but then the Hematites responded with three layups in transition to stretch the lead to 11-2, leading to a Norway timeout with 3 minutes left. All five starters scored in the first quarter when Marissa Maino scored down low to make it 15-5. Ishpeming finished the first quarter witha 17-7 lead over the Knights

The Ishpeming Hematites held strong onto their 10 point lead in the beginning of the 2nd quarter, responding to each Norway basket with one of their own, holding a 21-11 lead with 3 minutes left in the first half. A scoring drive to the basket by Jessica Spencer made it 23-11, and then Norway scored again to make it 23-13. Two free throws by Kaylie Engler with 13 seconds left gave the Hematites a 27-15 lead, but a Norway 3-pointer at the buzzer made it a 27-18 game at halftime. Kaylie Engler lead the Hematites in scoring with 10 points and 3 rebounds at halftime. Jessica Spencer contributed 8 points with 4 rebounds and Lindsey THompson and Marissa Maino each scored 4 points.

The third quarter started with the ball in Norway’s hands, who got the Hematites lead down to 3 after two straight three-pointers to make it 29-26. A set of free throws from Tammy Simula and a three=pointer quickly made it a 34-26 lead for the Hematites. After a free throw for the Knights, Marissa Maino had a offensive rebound, and scored on the putback, getting fouled for a 3-point play, making it 37-29. Jessica Spencer scored with less than ten seconds left in the quarter, and then Ishpeming stole the ball back and Kaylie Engler was fouled with .4 seconds left, making both free throws to make it a 41-29 lead going into the final quarter.

Norway Knights: 29
Tammy Simula scored the first basket of the fourth quarter for the Hematites, followed by a Norway basket to make it 43-33 with 6 minutes left. A jump shot by by Jessica Spencer was followed by a Knights 3-pointer, and then a layup by Kaylie Engler made it 49-36. Both teams were scoreless for over 2 minutes, until Kaylie Engler scored again with less than 2 minutes left to make it 51-36. Ishpeming held onto that lead, winning 51-36 over the Knights

The Ishpeming Hematites were lead in scoring by Kaylie Engler, who scored 20 points and 4 rebounds for the Hematites victory. Jessica Spencer also scored in double digits for Ishpeming, scoring 13 points and 6 rebounds. Marissa Maino and Tammy Simula both scored 7 points, Linsey Thompson scored 4 points. Norway was lead in scoring by Britta Grayvold and Jacey Bal, who scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Ishpeming won the JV game 48-33.
The Ishpeming Hematites girls team will travel to Superior Central to take on the Cougars next Monday, January 13th at 7:30p on 98.3 WRUP.
