Ishpeming Hematites (48) Boys Basketball at Gwinn Modeltowners (54) 1/22/15
Gwinn, MI – January 22, 2015 – The 4-2 Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the 6-2 Gwinn Modeltowners in Gwinn tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
The Hematites lost the tip off, and gave up the first basket when Gwinn scored to start with a 2 point lead. Gwinn scored again before Ishpeming got on the board with free throws by Ozzy Corp with 3 minutes left. Corp scored again for the Hematites to tie it at 4 with 2 minutes left. Gwinn scored at the free throw line, and then Ozzy Corp scored in the paint to give Ishpeming a 6-5 lead. Ishpeming scored on a jump shot by Ozzy Hakkarinen to make it 8-5 with a minute left, which remained the score at the end of the quarter.

Ozzy Corp hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter to make it 11-5 Hematites. After 2 free throws from the Modeltowners, Luke Kuliu hit a 3-pointer to make it 14-7. Gwinn responded with a 3-pointer from Micah Heath, followed by a free throw to make it 14-11.`Corp and Thomas Finegan both contributed free throws, and a pair of Gwinn free throws made it 17-13 with 2 minutes left. Another Gwinn free throw was followed by a layup by Dominic Suardini to make it 19-14 with 1:03 left. Gwinn scored on the next possession, and then a contested layup by Justin Beauchamp for Gwinn went in at the buzzer to make it a 19-18 game at halftime.

The second half began with Gwinn taking the lead with two free throws, and Thomas Finegan giving the Hematites the lead back with a nice jump shot to make it 21-20. Ozzy Corp hit a jump shot on the next play, and then Gwinn hit a 3-point shot to tie the game at 23. An Ozzy Corp layup in between two Gwinn field goals made it 25-27. The Hematites then took the lead back when Thomas Finegan hit a 3-pointer, followed by Ozzy Corp stealing the ball and scoring a layup to make it 30-27. Gwinn would score on the next two plays, making it 30-31 with a minute left in the quarter. Dan Thornton scored on a hook shot in the paint to give the Hematites the lead, but then Gwinn scored before the end of the quarter, taking a 32-33 lead into the fourth.

Ozzy Hakkarinen made a free throw to tie the game at 33, but then Gwinn scored to take the lead back. Erik Asplund hit a 3-pointer to give Gwinn a 4 point lead. Travis Fredy scored to make it 36-39, and then a put-back basket by Gwinn’s Beauchamp made it a 36-41 Modeltowner lead. Ozzy Hakkarinen made a 3-pointer with 2:30 left to cut the Gwinn lead to 2, followed by a 3-pointer from Kyle Torres to give Ishpeming a 42-41 lead. Gwinn took the lead back with 1:42 left when Beauchamp scored on a put-back, getting fouled and making the extra free throw to make it 42-44. Gwinn stretched the lead to 42-47 at the free throw line, and Ishpeming missed a 3-pointer that would have made it a one possession game. The Hematites were unable to take the lead back, despite 3-pointers by Corp and Finegan, losing the game 48-54.

Ishpeming was lead in the losing effort by Ozzy Corp and Thomas Finegan, who both had 13 points.Ozzy Hakkarinen also scored 6 points for the Hematites.
The Hematites’ JV team won 34-32.
