Ishpeming Hematites (46) Girls Basketball vs. Superior Central Cougars (15) 1/13/15
Eben, Michigan – January 13th, 2015 – The 5-1 Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the 1-4 Superior Central Cougars in Eben tonight! It is the second match-up between the two teams this year, with Ishpeming winning the first game at home, 59-12 on December 22nd. The Hematites won the tip off and scored on the first possession when Kaylie Engler drove to the basket and made a lay-up. Ishpeming would start the game on a 11-0 run behind 2 free throws by Engler, 2 field goals by Tammy Simula, and more free throws from Hailly Thompson and Lindsey Thompson. Superior Central scored their first basket of the game with less than a minute left in the quarter, but then Marissa Maino responded with a 3-pointer to give the Hematites a 14-2 lead going into the second quarter.

The Ishpeming Hematites scored the first basket in the second quarter when Tammy Simula drove to the basket on their first possession. The Hematites held Superior Central scoreless for much of the quarter, until they got on the board with a layup with 3 minutes left in the quarter. On the next possession, Jessica Penhale hit a 3-pointer to give Ishpeming a 19-4 lead. Jessica Spencer scored on a jump shot after getting her own rebound, making it 21-4 with 2 minutes left. Lindsey Thompson and Tammy Simula would both score again in the quarter, giving Ishpeming a 25-6 lead at halftime.

Superior Central Cougars: 6
The Hematites gave up the first points of the second half to the Cougars, but Jessica Spencer and Tammy Simula both scored on fast break layups to extend the lead to 29-8.
Ishpeming outscored the Cougars 13-4 in the third quarter, going into the fourth quarter with a 38-10 lead.

The Hematites had a large lead to hold onto going into the final quarter, and they stretched it even more with a jump shot by Jessica Spencer as well as a free throw by Jessica Penhale that made it 41-11 with 5 minutes left. Both teams fought hard in the last 4 minutes, but Ishpeming held on for a 46-15 victory.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Tammy Simula, who had 10 points and 3 rebounds in the win. The Thompson sisters, Hailly and Lindsey, both contributed to the win, with Hailly Thompson scoring 6 points and 6 rebounds, and Lindsey scoring 7 points with 1 rebound for the Hematites. 9 different players scored for Ishpeming.
The Ishpeming Hematites also won the JV game 60-18.
The Ishpeming Hematites girls team will travel to Iron Mountain to take on the Mountaineers this Thursday, January 15th at 7:45p on 98.3 WRUP.
