Ishpeming Hematites (39) Boys Basketball at Westwood Patriots (49) 1/24/15
Westwood, MI – January 24, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the Westwood Patriots in Westwood today. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!
Ishpeming got the first point of the game when Kyle Torres scored on a floating jumper. After a Westwood basket, Ozzy Corp scored for Ishpeming on the next play, and then Travis Fredy hit a jumpshot, giving Ishpeming an early 6-2 lead. After the Patriots scored again, Travis Fredy hit another shot to give the Hematites a 8-4 lead, but then a quick 7 point run by Westwood made it 8-11 with 1:35 left in the first quarter. A Westwood free throw was followed by a jumpshot by Thomas Finegan to make it 10-12 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter started with Westwood’s Gray scoring to extend the Patriots lead to 10-14. Both teams were held scoreless as the defenses both played tight, until Gray hit a 3-pointer halfway through the quarter to give the Patriots a 7 point lead. On the next play Kyle Torres hit a 3-pointer for Ishpeming, but Westwood scored on the next possession to make it 13-19. On the next Hematites play Thomas Finegan missed a shot but got his own rebound and put it in the basket to cut the Patriots lead to 4 points. After another Patriots basket Thomas Finegan put up two free throws, making the score 17-21 going into halftime.

Ishpeming started the second half with a Thomas Finegan scoring in the post to cut the lead to 2. After Westwood scored 3 points, Travis Fredy made a free throw, and missed a second free throw, with Ozzy Corp grabbing the offensive board and scoring 2 points. On the next Hematites play Finegan missed a running jump shot but Corp grabbed that rebound and put it back in to tie the game at 24. Westwood scored on a jumpshot on the next play and Thomas Finegan followed that play with a layup to tie the game back up with 3 minutes left. After another Westwood score, Ozzy Corp continued to dominate on the offensive board, cleaning up his own missed shot to put the ball back in, tying the game again at 28. Westwood’s Luke Gray scored on the other end, and then Thomas Finegan scored on an offensive rebound to tie it at 30 with less than a minute left. Westwood held for the last shot of the quarter, but didn’t score, making it a 30-30 game going into the fourth quarter.

The Hematites started with the ball in the final quarter, but a missed shot lead to Westwood scoring on the other end. Westwood scored again on their next possession, taking a 4 point lead. Ozzy Corp got the ball on an inbound pass and made a jump shot in the paint to cut the deficit to 2 points. On the next Ishpeming play Ozzy Hakkarinen picked up an offensive rebound and put the ball in to tie the game at 34 with 4:07 left. Westwood’s Luke Gray hit 2 free throws to take the lead back with 3:30 remaining. More Westwood free throws saw the Hematites down 34-39 with 1:50 left in the game. Ozzy Corp was fouled on a jumpshot, and made both free throws to cut the deficit to 3 points with 1:34 remaining. A set of Westwood free throws with 1:12 left gave Westwood a 36-41 lead over the Hematites. The Hematites were unable to cut the lead down, and after more Westwood free throws, Ishpeming lost the game 39-49.

The Hematites were lead in scoring by Thomas Finegan, who had 15 points, and Ozzy Corp with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Ishpeming was lead by Luke Gray with 18 points.
Ishpeming won the Freshman game 54-29 and the JV team won 49-36.
