Ishpeming, Michigan – January 29th, 2015 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Westwood Patriots at home tonight! Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you all the action live on 98.3 WRUP & WRUP.com!
The Hematites took a lead early in the quarter, with Marissa Maino scoring their first 5 points, followed by a free throw by Kaylie Engler to make it 6-0. Jessica Spencer hit a jumpshot followed by a shot by Marissa Maino to give Ishpeming a 10-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the quarter. Westwood’s first basket of the game was followed by a putback basket from Marissa Maino at the buzzer to give Ishpeming a 12-2 lead going into the second quarter.

Jessica Spencer scored under the basket early in the second quarter, and Westwood replied with a 3-pointer to make it 14-5. Kaylie Engler contributed two free throws, and then the Patriots had a 3-point play, making it 16-8. Morgan Skytta and Engler both scored, and Ishpeming lead 20-10 until Westwood went on a 7-1 run until the end of the quarter, cutting the Hematites lead to 21-17 at halftime.

The Hematites started the second half the same way the first half started, with Maino scoring in the paint. Neither team would put points on the board until there was under 3 minutes left in the quarter, when Tammy Simula drove to the basket and scored to make it 25-17. Westwood scored their first basket of the quarter with 2 minutes left, and Khora Swanson hit a jumpshot to make it 27-17. Westwood scored on a pick-and-roll play, and they would score once more to cut the lead to 27-21 going into the final quarter.

Westwood Patriots: 21
Engler opened the final quarter with a 3-pointer to stretch the Hematites lead to 9 points. After Maino and Engler both scored, Westwood scored twice to make it 32-24 with 5 minutes left. The Patriots hit a 3-pointer, followed by Lindsey Thompson scoring to make it 34-27 with 3 minutes left. A 3-pointer by the Westwood made it 35-30 with 2 minutes left. Ishpeming then passed the ball around to burn time, getting it down to :36 seconds when Kaylie Engler was fouled and made a free throw to make it 36-30. Free throws from Morgan Skytta would help seal the win for the Hematites, who won 38-32.
