Ishpeming, MichiganJanuary 14, 2015 – The 4-0 Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took on the 3-2 Negaunee Miners in Ishpeming tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!

Ishpeming won the tipoff and immediately got on the board with Ozzy Corp hitting a 3-point shot. Negaunee scored on the next possession on a put-back basket after a missed shot. Negaunee scored twice more, taking a 6-3 lead and forcing Ishpeming to take a timeout with 4:35 left in the quarter. Ishpeming struggled to score for over 3 minutes, until Dominic Suardini hit a 3-pointer to make it 6-8 with 1:30 left. Negaunee hit a jump shot at the buzzer, putting the Hematites down 6-10 going into the second quarter.

Both Ishpeming and Negaunee were scoreless for the first 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter, but then Ishpeming went back to the 3-point line, with Thomas Finegan hitting a deep shot to make it 9-10. Negaunee responded with a jump shot to make it 9-12. Travis Fredy got fouled on a putback attempt, and made both free throws to make it 11-12. Neither team would score for the last 3 minutes of the first half. Ishpeming only shot 3/14 from the field in the first half.

Ishpeming gave up a Miners basket on the first possession of the second half, making it 11-14. Negaunee would score two more points from the free throw, followed by Ishpeming throwing a deep pass to Dominic Suardini who made a layup to make it 13-15. After Travis Fredy had two back-to-back blocks on defense, Ozzy Corp hit a 3-pointer to make it a 1 point game, and then Ozzy hit a jumpshot to give the Hematites a 18-17 lead. Negaunee would score again to take the lead back, leaving the Hematites down 1 point going into the final quarter.

Ishpeming took the lead back with a layup by Thomas Finegan to make it 20-19. Negaunee’s Jay Lori hit a floating shot to give the Miners the lead back on the next play. On the next possession Ozzy Corp missed a jumpshot and Luke Kuliu picked up the rebound and put it back in. Jay Lori scored on the next play to make it 22-23 Miners. Ozzy Corp came back with a deep 2 point shot to give the Hematites a 24-23, and Lori hit a free throw for the Miners to tie it up at 24. Negaunee hit a 3 point basket to take the lead, and then a free throw to make it 28-24 with 4 minutes left.

Both teams were scoreless until the last minute, when Ozzy Corp got a rebound on defense and went coast to coast, scoring in the paint to make it 26-28 with 30 seconds left. Negaunee hit 2 free throws to make it 26-30, and Ishpeming missed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left. Negaunee hit 2 more free throws to take a 6 point lead, and Ishpeming missed another shot to end the game.

Ishpeming was lead in scoring by Ozzy Corp, who had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Thomas Finegan and Dominic Suardini both had 5 points for the Hematites. Ishpeming shot 29% from the field and had 19 turnovers. Ishpeming was out-rebounded 24-25.

Negaunee was lead in scoring by Jay Lori, who scored 11 points and 5 rebounds for the Miners. Dylan Tasson scored 9 points, and Dre Tuominen scored 9 points with 10 rebounds for Negaunee.

Negaunee won the JV game, beating Ishpeming 48-34. Ishpeming won the Freshman game, hitting a game-winning shot to win 30-28.

The 4-1 Ishpeming Hematites will take on the Marquette Redmen at home on Tuesday, January 20th, at 7:30pm on 98.3 WRUP and!
