The Ishpeming Hematites defeat the Westwood Patriots, 40-31

Ishpeming, MichiganDecember 11, 2014 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team took on the Westwood Patriots in Westwood tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought you the action live on 98.3 WRUP!

Ishpeming Hematites won the tip off, and jumped to an early 6-2 lead, before giving up a 7 point run from Westwood to make it a 9-6 Westwood lead. Ishpeming scored one more basket before the end of the quarter, making it 9-8 going into the second.

Westwood scored the first basket of the second quarter, but Ishpeming responded with a 3-point bank shot by Kaylee Engler to tie the game at 11. The Hematites and Patriots scored back and forth, with the score being tied at 17 at halftime.

Hematites vs. Patriots in Westwood

The Hematites started the second half on fire, with a 7-2 run to take a 24-19 lead. After a Westwood timeout, the Patriots responded with a 5 point run to tie the game back up at 24. Ishpeming scored 3 more points to take a 27-24 lead into the final quarter.

The Ishpeming Hematites extended their lead in the fourth quarter, with an 8-1 run giving them a 35-25 lead with 5 minutes left in the game. The Hematites defense held strong throughout the final quarter, holding Westwood to only 7 points in the final quarter, and holding on to a 40-31 win.

Jessica Spencer lead the Hematites in scoring with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Kaylie Engler scored 9 points for the Hematites, Lindsey Thompson scored 6 points, and both Morgan Skytta and Jessica Penhale contributed 4 points each in the win. Tammy Simula lead the team in rebounding with 6 rebounds, as well as 3 points for the Hematites. The Patriots were lead by Gabrielle Hebert, who scored 13 points, and Shana Caliguri who had 7 points and 3 rebounds for the Patriots.

The Ishpeming Hematites will take on the Escanaba Eskimos in Escanaba this Thursday, December 18th at 7:30pm on 98.3 WRUP and!
