Negaunee, MI – February 10th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Hematites Girls High School basketball team took on the Negaunee Miners this afternoon and took a staggering loss with a final score of 55-48.
Madigan Johns drew first blood this afternoon in the opening moments of the first frame facing off against the Negaunee Miners. Both teams were very stand-off and fought tooth and nail, shot for shot to show the crowd this game was going to be one of the seasons most exciting. The end of the first resulted in a tie 11-11, and we saw the Hematites pull ahead during the second quarter into halftime leading 21-19, this was reminiscent of the last time these two teams met, however Negaunee pulled ahead quickly during that game with a series of 3-pointers and it was up to the Hematites to make sure not to repeat history.
It was unfortunate for Ishpeming in the second half after a long fought game they lost their edge and Negaunee took every oppurtunity to take advantage of this, and stole the game away from Ishpeming to win it with a final score of 55-48 with thanks to some late game fouls pushing the lead unrealistically out of reach for some reason. This isn’t unusual for the Hematites as their only two losses shared similar downfalls when the girls committed a series of fouls at the end of the final frame and gave away free throws costing them the win.
Ishpeming and Negaunee will meet again however, and it’s anyone’s guess whether they learned from these two losses or not.
Madigan Johns led the team score with 20 points, followed by Mariah Austin with 10. The Hematites had 15 turnovers compared to Negaunee’s 4.
