Ishpeming, MI- January 13, 2017- The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team played their most complete game of the season tonight. They got their second win over the Ishpeming Westwood Patriots this season in a tough and physical battle.
It was the Patriots who were quick off the start to jump out to a 5-0 lead but then came the Hematites to get things close before the quarter would end. Hart Holmgren had a big first quarter as he would score 9 out of his 21 points. Still Westwood would lead going into the second 13-12.
Things would remain tight in the second quarter until the final few minutes when Ishpeming would close the half on a 11-4 run. Free throws were a big part of this game in the second, and most of the game, but the Hematites would sink 6 free throws to the Patriots only converting one. Ishpeming would lead 27-20 heading into the half.
The third quarter would have a lot of action but not a lot of points. There was a lot of back and forth, both teams creating tough turnovers. The Hematites would outscore the Patriots 7-5 in the third and lead 34-25 heading into the final quarter.
Once again, you would see a lot of action in the fourth quarter, but this time you would see the points to come with it. Ishpeming would add 19 points in the fourth quarter with great shooting, both from the field and free throw line. Westwood would also add 14 points to keep this game within reach but just didn’t have enough to keep up with the Hematites shooting 50% from the field. Final Score, Hematites win 53-39.
