
Manistique, MI – February 21, 2023 – The Ishpeming Hematites took on the Manistique Emeralds Tuesday night in Manistique where the Hematites came just shy of scoring 70 points against the Emeralds.
First quarter: The Ishpeming Hematites won the opening tip and Jenna Maki scored in just four seconds giving the Hematites a quick lead. The Manistique Emeralds were short some players Tuesday evening as they only had nine of their fourteen players on the court. Ishpeming wasted no time running away with the lead early in the game as they led 10-0 in the first minute and a half. Manistique was able to end a 13-0 run that the Hematites were on with a two point shot that finally put the Emeralds on the board. The defensive efforts of the Hematites were extremely strong as they continued to shutdown any opportunity that the Emeralds had. Halfway through the first quarter the Hematites were trampling Manistique as they led the Emeralds 19-2 in what was becoming a blowout game. After the first eight minutes of play came to an end the Hematites led the Emeralds 21-4.

Second quarter: The Ishpeming Hematites started off the second quarter with possession of the ball but ended up turning it over with a missed shot. Jenessa Eagle scored the first points of the quarter for the Hematites after coming up with a steal and taking it down court where she put in a lay-up. The Hematites continued forcing turnovers and converting on many of the opportunities as they led 29-6 in the first couple minutes of the second. After struggling through the first quarter and a good amount of the second as well, the Emeralds were able to get the ball rolling on offense. The Hematites slowed down on offense compared to the first quarter but they still had over double the amount of points than the Emeralds. Headed into halftime the Hematites led 35-16.

Third quarter: Manistique started the third quarter with possession of the ball as they looked to shrink the lead of the Hematites and keep any hopes of a comeback alive. The Hematites wasted no time forcing a turnover on the Emeralds as they looked to put up the first points of the quarter. Alexis Mcdade found the first points of the quarter with a two point shot that put the Emeralds on the board first. Compared to the first half of play the Emeralds were controlling the pace of play as they outscored the Hematites in the first few minutes. Mya Hemmer contributed a big amount to the Hematites lead as she continued to score in the third. Jenna Maki hit a huge three pointer as the quarter neared the halfway mark. The third quarter hit the halfway point and the Hematites led the Emeralds 50-24. Fourth Quarter: The Hematites started off with possession of the ball and Jennessa eagle sent a pass up to Mya Hemmer who put it up and in off the glass in the first few seconds. Manistique found their first points of the fourth from the free line throw line were a player made one. After some unsuccessful back and forth action Mya Hemmer put in a layup that sent the Hematites over sixty points for the night. The Hematites slowed down a little bit in the final minutes of play compared to what was seen in the past twenty four minutes of play. Payton Kakkuri hit a big three pointer in the final thirty seconds of play giving Ishpeming a 69-47 lead. The Final buzzer rang and the Ishpeming Hematites defeated the Manistique Emeralds 69-47.
