Ishpeming Hematites Win Against Manistique Emeralds 42-28, On 98.3 WRUP

Ishpeming, MI – February 25th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team went against the Manistique Emeralds Friday night. The game was broadcast live on 98.3 WRUP!

1st Quarter – Starting off in game with the tip off went to the Hematites Jenna Maki, a Hematite sophomore, who took it down the court and scored, 2-0 with just 30 seconds off the clock. The ball was with the Manistique Emeralds who started off with a strong defense but trickled in front of Ishpeming at 5-4. Hematites now with the ball began their offensive drive in the first quarter after Bailey Zellar had a great steal, gaining some points after passing to Jenna Maki at 9-6. Lilly Swanson then responded to a demanding drive with another layup, still pushing their game to the next level but still falling behind the Emeralds. There were only seconds left on the clock and the Hematites went into the 2nd quarter still behind Manistique at 9-7.

2nd Quarter – Entering the second quarter, the Hematites quickly got back on top of the Emeralds at 11-9. Two minutes into the 2nd quarter the Hematites took the ball across the court and Ishpeming senior, Hannah Deloughary, got two fouls bringing them a couple free throws. She was unsuccessful and the score was at 15-13 and it was still with the Hematites. Hematites were on the right side and Lilly Swanson who was still capitalizing on their momentum, as they continued to climb at 17-14. The teams were both pushing down the court with under one minute to go in the 2nd when Swanson was fouled. On the left side were the Emeralds who were trying to gain some offensive ground before the end of the half. The Manistique Emeralds entered halftime still behind the Hematities at 20-14.

3rd Quarter – With the basketball game back underway, the Emeralds were looking for some more offensive edge to get back on top of the Hematites now at 20-16. The Hematites continued to dominate over Manistique and weren’t letting them get up for any air, 22-16. Far in the lead were the Hematites, still looking strong as Addie Morton put up another 3 pointer. Ishpeming’s offensive drives in this game were just superb during their possession. With 4 minutes left in the 3rd, the Hematites kept up on their defensive line and just tried to keep possession to run the clock. The Manistique team was looking to gain some momentum as they started to land some points for the Emeralds, 24-18. The Hematite #5, Bailey Zellar scored another 2 pointer

off the glass, getting two free throws as well. The two teams were down to the wire with under 2 minutes left in the quarter as they entered the last quarter on Friday night at 29-22 for the Hematites.

4th Quarter – In the last quarter on Friday, the Hematites really kept up their determination as they led at 31-22. With their defense controlling the Emeralds, they kept pushing their 3 point shooters out there with no luck. The Ishpeming team started another possession of the quarter with a great drive continuing their amazing lead, at 35-26 with under 6 minutes left in the game. Addie Morton was at the top of the key and kept passing the ball down the court scoring again, at 38-26. The Hematites have always struggled with their free throw percentage however they came back in Friday’s game with their scoring. The Manistique Emeralds were still far behind even after a successful free throw with under a minute left at 42-27. The Ishpeming Hematites continued to steal possession after possession and gave the Emeralds no room to catch up. The Hematites closed out their season, winning against the Manistique Emeralds at 42-28.
