Ishpeming, MI – February 19th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team went against the Gladstone Braves Saturday afternoon. The game was broadcast live on 98.3 WRUP!
1st Quarter – Starting off in game with the tip off went to the Hematites Jenna Maki, a Hematite sophomore, took it down the court. The ball was with the Gladstone Braves but with the Hematites defense, they lost possession. Hematites now with the ball, began dominating in the first quarter after Bailey Zellar with a great steal, gaining some points at 5-2 . The Gladstone Braves then responded to a demanding drive with another layup, still pushing their game to the next level with the Hematites now at 9-6. The Hematites own Addie Morton secured a rebound and floated another free throw in, and the teams were both still climbing going into the 2nd quarter at 14-13.
2nd Quarter – Beginning the second quarter, the Hematites quickly got back on top of the Braves at 15-14 after an aiding offensive drive from Jenna Maki. With under 6 minutes in the 2nd quarter the Hematites took the ball across the court and Ishpeming senior, Hanna Deloughary, was fouled with two free throws for her. Hematites on the left side was Bailey Zellar still searching for some momentum to get back the lead, now at 20-18 for the Braves. Jenna Maki, Hematites #1, had a great defensive play and pushed Gladstone out of bounds. The teams were both pushing down the court with only 2 minutes left in the first half. The Hematites started to feel some momentum and stole back the lead on top of the Braves at 34-24. On the left side was #22 Hannah Deloughary with the Hematies went up for 2 more points. The Hematites entered halftime still behind the Braves at 36-24.
3rd Quarter – With the basketball game back underway, the Braves were looking for some more offensive edge to get back on top of the Hematites at 34-24. The Hematites continued to dominate over the Braves and weren’t letting them get up for any air, at 40-24. Far in the lead were the Hematites, still looking strong as Addie Morton put up another 3 pointer 49-24. Ishpeming’s offensive drives in this game were just superb, as they scored 25 points in a row during their possession. With 4 minutes left in the quarter, the Hematites kept up on their defensive line and just tried to keep possession to run the clock. The Gladstone team was looking to gain some momentum as #1, Clair van Ginhoven landed some points for the Braves, 49-28. The Hematite #5, Bailey Zellar scored another 2 pointer off the glass, getting down to the wire with under 2 minutes left in the quarter. The Braves were just getting stomped on as they entered the last quarter on Saturday at 53-32.
4th Quarter – In the last quarter on Saturday, the Hematites really kept up their battle. With their defense controlling the Gladstone Braves, they kept pushing their 3 point shooters out there with no luck. The Ishpeming team started their first possession of the quarter with a great drive continuing their amazing lead, at 56-34 with under 6 minutes left in the game Lilly Swanson at the top from the Hematites made what was thought a clean block but was fouled. The Hematites have always struggled with their free throw percentage however came back this quarter with some fire. Gladstone was still far behind even after one successful free throw. Going into 2 minutes left in the game Mayce Hanson, Gladstone #5, put the ball up for her own layup and scored another point. With the Hematites just owning this game, Jenna Maki flushed a 3 pointer in and kept climbing at 56-35. Hematites continued to trail behind when the buzzer went off and lost to the Gladstone Braves Saturday afternoon, 60-37.
