Ishpeming, MI – February 18th, 2019 – It was an exciting night in Ishpeming as the Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team faced the Gladstone Braves for the first game of the double-header night. The boys were set to face the Calumet Copper Kings later on, and Tyler and Bob brought you both games on 98.3 WRUP and online at WRUP.com!
Gladstone got onto the scoreboard first with a quick two points, but the Ishpeming Hematites tied the game up at 2-2 just seconds later. Soon, the score was 5-4 for the Braves, and the scoring didn’t look to slow down anytime soon. The Hematites took the lead after two nice free throws with a score of 7-5, and they tried their best to defend their small advantage. Ishpeming kept their one-point lead as the first quarter fell under two minutes to play with a score of 9-8. Before the first buzzer, the Gladstone Braves were able to tie the score up at 12-12, and the game was reset going into the second quarter.
First Quarter Score
Ishpeming Hematites: 12
Gladstone Braves: 12
The Ishpeming Hematites broke the stalemate with two consecutive free throws, but Gladstone quickly neutralized that advantage. It was 16-16 1:30 into the second quarter, and both teams were finding the bottom of net extremely well. Eventually, the Braves started to gain an advantage, and with just under two minutes to play, the Hematites trailed by four points. With under :30 seconds left in the half, Ishpeming was trying anything they could do to even the score, but Gladstone would have the lead going into the second half of play.
First Half Score
Ishpeming Hematites: 16
Gladstone Braves: 22
Action in the second half started out slow, with no scoring for the first minute of the quarter. The Ishpeming Hematites were doing a great job working the ball around the arch, but they were having problems working the ball into the paint. The score remained 22-16 for Gladstone two minutes in, probably because the play was being constantly interrupted by whistles. The Braves scored first in the second half, but Ishpeming answered back on the very next drive to make it 24-18. Gladstone caught fire near the end of the third quarter, and the Hematites seemed unable to stop the Braves’ offense. By the end of the quarter, Gladstone had nearly doubled Ishpeming’s score.
Third Quarter Score
Ishpeming Hematites: 20
Gladstone Braves: 39
With some serious ground to make up, the Ishpeming Hematites only had eight more minutes to mount a comeback. Neither team scored in the first minute of the fourth, but Ishpeming put up a layup to get onto the scoreboard first for the quarter. The teams traded a few points back and forth throughout the quarter, and Ishpeming was able to make up some ground. However, time was winding-down quickly, and the Hematites were scrambling for any points. Ishpeming trailed by 10 points (46-36) with under two minutes to play, and Gladstone seemed to be on their heels after the Hematites began to fight back. Cheers filled the gym with every single Ishpeming point, and the Hematites players seemed to feed off their fans’ energy. The Hematites trailed by just six points with :60 seconds left in the game, but thanks to an Ishpeming free throw seconds later, they closed to within two baskets with :50 seconds remaining. It was 48-44 with just under :30 seconds left to play thanks to a great Sophie Hooper three-pointer. As the game fell under :10 seconds to play, the Hematites still trailed by four points, but they had one timeout remaining. Despite their amazing effort, Ishpeming wasn’t able to overtake the tough Gladstone Braves team.
