Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball (31) VS Norway Knights (38) on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com 01/07/2016

Ishpeming, Michigan – January 7th, 2016 – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in Ishpeming, MI for the Ishpeming Hematites game against the Norway Knights on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com. The Hematites looked to keep their season going strong, and Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!

Chloe Sjoholm won the opening tip-off for the Ishpeming Hematites, but the Norway Knights were able to stop them before they scored. The Hematites drew first blood when they were able to put two points onto the scoreboard thanks to a quick lay-up. Halfway through the quarter, Norway held the lead with seven, over the four points of Ishpeming. The Hematites worked hard to make a comeback, and as the first quarter wound down, they led Norway 11-8 on 98.3 WRUP!

Defense was the name of the game in the first quarter, and the Ishpeming Hematites played some great basketball. However, the Norway Knights fought their way back into the lead by two points thanks to two quick jump shots and a free-throw. The game remained extremely close, but Norway was able to open a five point scoring gap over the Hematites as the first half wound down.

First Half Score:
Ishpeming Hematites: 16
Norway Knights: 21

The Ishpeming Hematites again took the opening tip-off, and they made a quick break for the basket. Marissa Minot did a great job, both on offense and defense, with great stats in the first half of play. Mariah Austin helped the Hematites fight their way back into the lead when she threaded her way through the Knights’ defense to make a nice layup. Jessica Penhale also helped Ishpeming keep the game close, thanks to her impressive ball movement skills. As the third quarter ended, the Hematites led Norway 27-26 on 98.3 WRUP!

The action of the first three quarters continued, but the Norway Knights managed fight their way into a six point lead early in the fourth quarter. The Ishpeming Hematites did their best to keep the game close, and the game was sure to go right down to the wire. The game was mostly foul-free, but as the game remained close, both teams began to use their “free” fouls to stop the other teams’ scoring opportunities. In the final minutes of the game, the Knights found themselves with a small lead, and Ishpeming had to play perfect basketball in order to take the win.

    Can you please make an announcement at the boy’s game tonight about the The Hematite Legacy: Where it all began game on Tuesday, January 12th being played in the IHS old gymnasium. Any GIRLS bball alumni willing to attend will get in free and be recognized at half time of the varsity game. The IHS booster club is hosting a meet and greet for all players on the new gym sports deck starting at 6:45.
