8/28/14 Iron Mountain, MI – Excitement bristled in the air as the Back-to-Back State Champs took the field in Iron Mountain to kick off the Hematite Football season. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau brought all the Hematite Football action to you LIVE on 98.3 WRUP.
The Hematites received the ball from the kickoff in the first quarter and pulled out their “I” formation. They also utilized the “wildcat” formation as they attempted to move the ball down the field on their first set of downs. Ishpeming played with their customary intensity, keeping possession of the ball five minutes into the first quarter. The Hematites kept the ball on the ground for their first set of initial plays. Halfway through the quarter, the Hematites finally put the ball in the air as they continued to move down the field. Ishpeming failed to make the touchdown after their first run and turned the ball over to the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers battled the Hematite defense with some strong passing as the clock counted down the quarter. Ishpeming intercepted an Iron Mountain pass and drove through the end zone for the first touchdown of the game, putting the first points on the board. The Mountaineers attempted to drive down field against the Hematite defense to tie the score. Although the Mountaineers started their push with some great passing and a first down with only a few minutes left in the quarter, the first quarter ended with a score of 6-0, Hematites in the lead.
The second quarter started with an Ishpeming interception causing a touchback. The Hematites started their first offensive drive of the quarter as they met the Mountaineer defense head on. Ishpeming immediately scored an AWESOME running touchdown as they busted through Iron Mountain’s defense – bumping the score up to 14-0 after making the two point conversion. The Mountaineers tried again to push the ball forward against the Hematite defense, but were stopped by the bulletproof-vest-like Ishpeming defense. As the quarter continued, the Hematite offense continued to move the ball down the field. They pushed the ball forward with intense running, quickly finding the holes in Iron Mountain’s defensive line. The Hematites scored another touchdown, bringing the score up 20-0. With just about four minutes left to the half, the Mountaineers started another offensive drive against the Hematites hoping to push the ball into the end zone to no avail. The half ended 20-0, Ishpeming in the lead.
The second half started with Ishpeming kicking the ball to Iron Mountain. Still amped up from the first half, the Hematites took possession of the ball, intercepting a Mountaineer pass. The third quarter moved quickly as Ishpeming continued to push the ball down field. Hematite determination continued as Ishpeming scored another touchdown, bringing their lead to 28-0 after another two point conversion with the Hematite “wildcat” formation. The Mountaineers tried to break through the impenetrable Hematite defense as the third quarter clock continued to run. Iron Mountain tried to drive the ball into the end zone with their “shotgun and spread” formations, but ran right into the Rock wall of the Ishpeming Hematites. The quarter ended with Ishpeming leading 28-0.
Ishpeming opened the fourth quarter with another offensive drive against the Iron Mountain defense. The Hematites powered the ball toward the end zone as the determined Mountaineers tried to push back. Hematite excitement filled the air as Ishpeming scored another touchdown using their “I” formation, bringing the score to 36-0. The Hematites held Iron Mountain scoreless as the Mountaineers did their best to drive for a touchdown, one last attempt to score against Ishpeming. Ishpeming denied the Mountaineers in this shutout game, keeping the score at 36-0. GOOD JOB HEMATITES!!!
