Ishpeming Hematite Girls Basketball -Ishpeming Hematites (59) VS Gwinn Modeltowners (42) on 98.3 WRUP 2/15/14

2/15/14 – Gwinn, Michigan – It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and the Ishpeming Hematite girls were in Gwinn today to take on the Modeltowners. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were also in Gwinn with the Hematites to bring you all the basketball action LIVE on 98.3 WRUP. This was a make up game from early December due to the winter weather cancellations that had happened earlier in the season. Both teams were determined to play with a goal to win in preparation for the upcoming district games. What a great way to keep up with the weekend, with some Hematite basketball action. “Respect the Rock!!!”
The game started off with Gwinn recovering the jump ball off of the floor, but passed the ball out of bounds giving the ball to Ishpeming. The Hematites quickly scored a basket “off of the glass” putting the first points on the board. Shortly after, the Hematites applied a full court pressure defensive against the Modeltowner offense and regained the ball. The Hematites scored a “nice” shot on the left side increasing their lead to 4-0. The Modeltowners were able to sink a basket of their own in, putting them on the board (4-2, Hematites). Both teams were battling toughly back and forth, but Gwinn posted a nice three pointer taking the lead for a moment (5-4). However the Hematites quickly retaliated back sinking a nice shot and took back the lead at 6-5. The energy was high and the pace was fast and competitive between both teams. The Hematites got a chance at the free throw line and was able to make both shots increasing their lead to 8-5. Then Ishpeming was able to sink another bucket and got fouled during the shot bringing them back to the free throw line. Unable to make the free throw the score became 10-5, Hematites in the lead. The Hematites returned to the free throw line again and was able to make both shots bumping up their lead to 12-5. The Modeltowners got two chances at their free throw line and was able to sink one in each time adding a two points to their score (12-7, Hematites). As the quarter winded down, the game continued to move at a fast competitive pace between both teams. The first quarter ended with a score of 16-9 after the Modeltowners were able to score again and the Hematites sunk two more buckets with one at the buzzer.
The second quarter continued with just same amount of energy as the first quarter had. Both teams continued to battle back and forth with strict competitiveness. The Hematites utilized their tight press defense against Gwinn. The Modeltowners got a chance at their free throw line, but were unable to make the shots. Gwinn began to toss up a moving screen like defense against the Hematites. The Modeltowners got another chance at the free throw line and was able to sink one in adding one more point to their score. Ishpeming then stole the ball from Gwinn but was called on a offense foul. In return the Modelttowner put another shot in which made the score 16-12, Hematites in the lead. Shortly after, the Hematites answered back with a “traditional three point play”, which included a basket and a free throw making the score 19-12, Hematites maintaining their lead. Ishpeming returned to the free throw line again and was able to make both throws increasing their lead by two more points. As the second quarter continued to wind down the Hematites used their full court pressure defense against the Modeltowners. The score became 21-13, Hematite lead after each team was able to post a few more shots. Ishpeming returned to the free throw line again and was able to make both shots increasing the score to 23-13. The quarter continued to be a tough one between both team’s determination, high energy and a fast pace. The Modeltowners returned to the free throw line twice and made both shots, but the Hematites tossed one “up and in” making the score 25-13, Hematites lead. Gwinn quickly answered back with a “big” three pointer of their own closing the Hematite lead to 25-18. Ishpeming made another great bucket adding two more points back to their lead. The half ended with the Hematites maintaining their lead at a score of 27-18.
The third quarter started off with a great pass between the Hematites players against the Modeltowner defense. Ishpeming went straight to the free throw line and was able to make both shots. The Hematites continued to use their ‘full court pressure” defense against the Modeltowners. Gwinn in returned put one “up and in” and got a chance at their free throw line but couldn’t make the shot. The Hematites made some shot attempts during their ball possession after the Modeltowner basket but could not make it in. Both teams kept up the strict competitiveness and high energy spirit in their game. The score was 31-20, Hematites in the lead after a lot of third quarter girls basketball action. The Hematites were able to sink in a “long” two pointer making their lead 33-20. Ishpeming then made another quick bucket “off the square and down” adding two more points to their lead. The pace remained fast between both teams. Gwinn used some great passing of their own and was able to make a nice basket making the score 35-22, Hematites in the lead. Gwinn was then able to make a ‘big shot from the paint” giving them two more points but the score became 37-24 after the Hematites posted a bucket of their own. The fast paced and competitive third quarter ended with a score of 39-24, Hematites remaining in the lead.
Ishpeming went to the free throw line to start the quarter and was able to sink the shot in. The Modeltowners answered back with a bucket of their own, but the Hematites retaliated back with a quick basket (43-26, Hematites). The high energy that was present in the first quarter continued in the fourth quarter. The Hematites posted a great “long shot from down the middle” adding two more points to their score. Gwinn wasted no time and answered back by posting a great shot of their own. The competitiveness spirit continued to be high. The score was 45-28 with the Ishpeming staying firm on their lead. Gwinn got a chance at the free throw line after a foul and was able to sink both shots (45-30, Hematites). Ishpeming was able to make another basket and then quickly post another one “from the back door” making the score 49-30, Hematite lead. Then the Hematites returned to the free throw line and was able to make both shots adding two more points to their lead (51-30, Hematites). The Modeltowners got a chance at the free throw line as well and was able to make both of their shots. Gwinn used a full court press defense against the Hematites and got possession of the ball. Both teams were able to sink some baskets bringing up the score to 53-36. Gwinn returned to the free throw line again and was able to make both throws (53-38, Hematites). With the quarter and game coming to an end the Hematites utilized their passing and patiently slowed down to control the clock. The Hematites returned to the free throw line and were able to make both shots (55-38, Hematites). The quarter and game continued to be very competitive between both teams as they retained that high energy and fast pace throughout. The Modeltowners were able to make a “big” bucket as the clock wound down. Ishpeming returned to the free throw line again after another foul and was able to make one of the throws. The game ended with a final score of 59-42, Hematites win. NICE JOB HEMATITES!!!!
