Bringing that “front row feeling” right to you, Bob Nadeau and Mike Plourde described the suspenseful game on 98.3 WRUP.
After the Cougars beat the Hematites earlier this season, the Hematites were eager to get revenge. However, the Cougars placed their name on the scoreboard first with a free throw. The Cougars seemed to be pulling ahead (6-2, 9-2…). Then, the Hematites perked up. Defense held strong. Offense slipped in several baskets until the score was 12-8 (Cougars). After a free throw for Superior Central, the quarter ended with the Cougars still on top 13-10.
The Hematites received the ball to start the second quarter but the shot attempt was blocked from behind. Then, the Hematites did sink a basket (13-12 Cougars)! Seeing their chance, Ishpeming scored a free throw to tie the score. In an amazing show of teamwork, the Hematites wound their way down the court for a two pointer and took lead! After a fight for the basket, Ishpeming’s narrow lead was disrupted and the game was again tied. The score rose, but neither team was able to break the tie. The Cougars called a time out when the scoreboard read 23-23. The Hematites tried a full court press to end the half with success (26-23 Ishpeming)!
Blasting out of halftime, both teams with renewed drive, the score rose from 27-23 (Ishpeming) to 32-29 (Ishpeming) within a minute! The Cougars used a full court press but Ishpeming slipped through for another basket (34-29 Ishpeming). A stunning shot by Superior Central gave them the lead (36-34 Cougars). When the quarter ended, the scoreboard read 40-39 in favor of the Cougars.
The Hematites started the fourth quarter by taking a marginal lead (41-39). In a game this close, every shot – every free throw – could determine the winner! Ishpeming trailed until a three pointer brought the score to 44-42 (Ishpeming)! Time slipped off the clock as the battle raged on the court. With 13 seconds left in the game, the Hematites sunk a free throw and a basket in quick succession, bringing the score to 47-45 (Hematites). Ishpeming secured the game with one last free throw! The final score was 48-45 (Hematites).
