The Ishpeming Hematite Boys Basketball – Ishpeming Hematites (53) VS Westwood Patriots (25) on 98.3 WRUP 1/10/14

1/10/14 – Westwood MI – It was Hematite Boys Basketball Friday Night in Westwood as the Hematite Boys took on the Westwood Patriots.  With the weather finally at tolerable temperatures and the potential for some more snow, fans were excited for a great game before the weekend.  Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were “respecting the rock” in Westwood and brought us all the basketball action live on 98.3 WRUP.

The game started off with high energy and determination between both teams.  Ishpeming won the jump ball to set the game underway.  Utilizing quick passing the Hematites quickly scored the first basket of the game.  The Hematites then rebounded a Patriot shot and scored another bucket (4-0, Hematites).  Westwood decided to put on a press against Ishpeming, but the Hematites continued to utilize their quick passes.  Westwood received a rebound and brought the ball back down to their basket but was unable to score.  The Hematites moved the ball back down to their zone and scored on a nice lay up making the score 6-0, Hematites lead.  Westwood attempted a three pointer but was unable to sink it in.  The Patriots continued to battle the Hematite defense, but continued to hit a wall.   The Hematites scored again on an excellent lay up keeping their lead at 8-0.  Westwood continued to make various shot attempts but were unsuccessfull.  Ishpeming was able to score another lay up and a long shot bringing the score to 12-0, Ishpeming lead.  The Hematite defense continued to stand tough.  The quarter ended with a score of 14-0, Hematites in the lead.

The second quarter started with Westwood having the ball but could not score.  Ishpeming fired off a three pointer to start, but was unsuccessful as well.  The Hematites continued to have a “brick wall” like zone defense against the Patriots.  The ball was passed fluently amongst both teams and each team attempted some three pointers early in the quarter but neither were successful. With determination Ishpeming did get a chance to post a great three point bucket increasing their lead to 17-0.  The Patriots continued to make different shot attempts but continued to remain unsuccessful against the Hematite defense.  Ishpeming was able to make another basket increasing their lead a little more to 19-0.  With just about two minutes left of the half, the game continued to be a passing game.  The Hematites did score again off of a left handed lay up.  Westwood was able to put some points on the board by sinking a three pointer.   Westwood then got a chance at the free throw line and was able to make the shot changing the score to 19-4, Hemtite lead.  The half ended with a score of 23-4, Ishpeming leading.

The Patriots started off the third quarter with the ball, however that “brick wall” Hematite defense made a great shot block and took over the ball.  Then they  quickly scored a long two point basket increasing their lead, however the Patriots returned with a lay up of their own.  Score was 25-6, Hematite lead.   The Hematites got a chance at the free throw line but were unable to make the free throws.  Westwood received the rebound and posted another bucket of their own, score 25-8, Hematite lead.  Both teams continued to utilize great passing technique.  The Hematites got pocession of the ball after a foul and made a great shot off of the square increasing the score to 27-8, Hematites.    The Patriots fired off a great lay up from under the basket and then Ishpeming fastly scored a quick shot of their own.  The Patriots continued to punch at the Hematite defense, but the Hematites continued to fix the punch holes with baskets of their own.  The score became 29-10 after each team posted some great shots.  The Hematites made another quick basket, got fouled and returned to the free throw line and made the shot, the score 33-10.  Westwood returned the favor with another basket of their own (32-12, Hematites).  With determination the Patriots were then able to score a three point shot to close the lead by “bits” at a time, the score 32-15, with Hematites maintaining the lead.  Both teams fired off great shot attempts with Ishpeming making two more lay ups and returning to the free throw line again, and making their free throw.  The Patriots got a chance at their free throw line as well after a foul and was able to score both.  The quarter ended with a score of 37-17, Hematites in the lead

The forth and final quarter began with the Patriots quickly passing the ball, but were unable to score.  Ishpeming posted another lay up and ended up returning to the free throw line again and making the shot (40-17, Hematites).  The Patriots posted a great three point bucket of and made it in making the score 40-20 (Hematites) after the shot.  Ishpeming got to attempt a 1:1 free throw but could not make it in.  The energy remained high and the determination was stubborn with both teams.  The Hematites continued to utilize their “wall type” defense.  The Patriots returned to the free throw line and was able to score the shot.  Ishpeming made various exciting shot attempts but were unsuccessful.  The score was 44-21, after another Hematite bucket.  Both teams continued to play tough and fast paced.  Various fouls were made and the Patriots were able to score two more free throws from the line.  The Hematites then scored another basket after a Westwood full court press.  Passes were continued to be made, baskets were attempted, and the pace picked up even more for both teams.  Ishpeming scored again after some great moves and teamwork.  With two minutes left of the game the excitement continued.  Ishpeming scored a great three pointer from the “point” increasing the score even more, but the Patriots retailated with a long two pointer of their own. Ishpeming returned to the free throw line for a double bonus, but was only able to make one shot out of the two, the score was then 52-25, Hematites.  With one minute left of the game the Hematites returned to the free throw line again and made the free throw.  Both teams utilized their time outs.   Passing continued as Ishpeming ran down the clock in the last minute.  The game ended with a final score of 53-25, Hematites winning!!!

    I also like your detailed write-up of the games. It’s hard to read white print on black background, though.
