1/17/2014 Manistique, Michigan – What a perfect start to the weekend – “Respect the Rock” Hematite Girls Basketball Friday Night!!! The Hematite girls traveled through the bitter cold and snow to Manistique to take on the Emeralds tonight. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were there live to bring you all the action on 98.3 WRUP.
Basketball excitement was in the air as intent was in the minds of both teams. Ishpeming won the jump ball and started the game with great passes. Manistique was able to steal the ball from a Hematite pass however and fired off a shot and got fouled. The Emeralds got a chance at the free throw line and made one shot, putting the first point on the board. (Manistique 1-0). Manistique utilized the zone defense against the Hematites. Ishpeming was able to put points on the board after an excellent jump shot and took over the lead, and scored again after an Emerald bucket (4-3, Hematites). The Hematites then stole the ball from the Emeralds, made a lay up and got fouled while making the basket. Unable to score the free throw, Hematites recovered the ball. The quarter continued with intense intent between both teams. Manistique decided to apply some full court pressure and ended up fouling a Hematite. Ishpeming returned to the line, but missed both free throws. The Emeralds were able to score another bucket during the action. Manistique got a chance at the free throw line, making one shot and tying the score at 6-6. Ishpeming quickly broke the tie with a bucket down the middle (8-6, Hematites). With two minutes left of play in the first quarter some more baskets were made and the score became 10-6, Hematite lead. The excitement continued in the first quarter with each team making some great baskets and buckets. The quarter ended with a score of 13-10, Ishpeming in the lead.
The Emeralds started the second quarter with the ball. The whistle blew a couple of times but both team recovered and picked up the pace. The Hematites took the ball down court attempted some hard shots but could not make a bucket. The score continued to be 13-10 with the Hematites maintaining the lead. The Emeralds got fouled during a unique play but was unable to make the free throw. Ishpeming utilized their passing game and posted a great bucket to increase their lead to 15-10. The Hematites got to return to the free throw line again and made both shots (17-10, Hemaitites). Ishpeming decided to turn on the full court press but Manistique was able to score a nice shot from under the basket. Ishpeming retaliated back though and tossed one in themselves making the score 19-12. Both teams continued with intent and tossed up more shots but neither could score during the action before a time out was called. The Emeralds posted a nice three point basket to close the lead to 19-17, Hematites. Ishpeming continued with a full court press defensive tactic. With one minute left in the half both teams intently passed the ball and made some more shot attempts. The half ended with a score of 21-18 Hematite lead after both teams had attempts at the free throw line and chances with the ball offensively.
The third quarter continued with intense intent. Manistique started the half with the ball and ended up going to the free throw line making a shot (21-19, Hematites). Ishpeming quickly made a basket in return. The score became 25-19, Hematite lead after a few more buckets. Both teams continued the quarter with intent as they were able to post some great shots. The score shortly became 30-21 with the Hematites continuing to maintain the lead. The full court pressure was brought on by the Hematites with intent to keep their lead. The Emeralds were able to beat the press and score another basket (30-23, Hematites). Manistique continued to pass the ball, Ishpeming was able to steal it and move it down court but could not fired off a shot against the Emerald defense. Manistique returned to the free throw line and was able to make both free throws closing the lead to 30-25, Ishpeming. The Emeralds double teamed the Hematites on a defensive play, but the Hematites were able to go to the free throw line after a foul, but could not make the throw. Both teams intently utilized quick passing and ball moving up and down the court throughout the quarter. With two minutes left of the quarter the full court pressure defensive tactic continued. The score was increased to 34-27, Hematites after a few more baskets from both teams. With one minute left the score was 35-29, Hematite keeping the lead. The quarter ended with a score of 37-31 after a few more awesome plays by both teams.
The last quarter started off with continued intent and the Emeralds ball. The score was 39-31, Ishpeming leading after another Hematite bucket post. The intense excitement continued with both teams as the Hematites fought to keep their lead and the Emeralds fought to take it over. The Emeralds thought about attempting a three pointer but thought better of it. Manistique did return to the free throw line and was able to make the shots closing the lead to 39-33, with the Hemtites leading. More shots were attempted with both teams as well as multiple fouls being called. Ishpeming did make another great basket increasing their lead to 41-33. The Hematites returned to the line again for a 1:1 attempt but could not make the basket. Both teams continued with passing and shot attempts increasing the excitement as the quarter progressed. Ishpeming increased their lead by ten (43-33) after a great basket from down the middle. The intense intent continued as the Hematites posted yet another bucket. With two minutes left of the the game the Hematites pushed the lead up to twelve points. Manistique quickly lowered that twelve point lead to ten (45-35, Hematites) after a quick basket from downtown. The Hematites ended up losing one player to fouls with a minute left of the game. Manistique returned to the free throw line and were able to make both shots. Then they quickly pulled their full court press against the Hematites, but caused a foul bring Ishpeming to the free shot line. Ishpeming was not able to make the free throws but was able to catch the rebound. The Hematites were fouled again stopping the clock briefly and returned back to the free throw line, making both shots (47-37, Hematites). The game ended with the Hematites hanging on to the ball. Hematites won it with a final score of 48-39. Great job Hematites!!!
