Ishpeming Hematite Friday Night on Saturday Afternoon – Ishpeming Hematites (44) VS Harbor Beach Pirates (10) on 98.3 WRUP

Marquette Michigan 11/23/13 – The Weather was snowy and it looked like winter has finally arrived, but still football was in the air.  It may have been snowing outside this Saturday afternoon, but inside the Superior Dome in Marquette, football was the event of the day.  This afternoon the Ishpeming Hematites took on the Harbor Beach Pirates in the 4th round of the MHSAA playoffs, the winner of this game gets to go down to Detroit to play for the championship at Ford Field.  Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were at the dome to bring you all the action on 98.3 WRUP.

The game started with Ishpeming receiving the ball from the Harbor Beach kickoff after losing the coin toss.  The Hematites started off with a 13 yard kick return to begin their first offensive drive of the game.  Making small yard gains, the Hematites continued to push the ball down field.  Both teams were playing hard with determination to win.  The offensive drive continued with Ishpeming making great running plays to bring the ball forward.  Excitement continued to build up as Ishpeming brought the ball to “first and goal” and scored a touchdown with just over 5 minutes to go in the quarter putting points on the board for Ishpeming at 6-0. The Harbor Beach Pirates then had their turn to start their first offensive drive against the Hematites.  Unable to move the ball very far the Pirates, ended their drive by punting back to the Hematites.  On their second offensive drive after the punt the Hematites utlized their running plays againt the Pirates.  With under three minutes left of play in the quarter the Hematites faced the Pirate defense and were unable to move the ball.  Harbor Beach ended up taking over the ball on downs.  The quarter ended with no further touchdowns, the score Ishpeming 6 and Harbor Beach 0.

The Pirates attempted to go for their first down at the start of the quarter, unable to get it, they ended up turning the ball over to the Hematites on downs.  The Hematties started moving the ball by making small gains.  Both teams were pumped up with determination each trying to stop each other with both offense and defense.  With the Hematites again utlizing their running plays against the Pirates they were able to score another touchdown after a 4 yard run bringing the score: Hematites 14 to Pirates 0 after the two point conversion.  Harbor Beach started their offensive drive after a squib kick.  With just under 9 minutes left of the half the Pirates continued to attempt to try and push the ball forward against the Hematite defense.  Harbor Beach was unable to move the ball and ended up turning the ball over back to the Hematites on downs.  The Hematites started their offensive drive with a running play with 6 minutes left  in the half.  Utilizing their Wing Back Formation the Hematites made a great play bringing the ball at least 20 yards down field.  After the huddle the Hematites used their Wing Back Formation again to bring the ball to the goal line after a great passing play.  With 5 minutes left of the quarter the Hematites scored a touchdown making the score 22 to 0.  The Hematites kicked the ball back to Harbor Beach, however the Pirates fumbled the ball on the kick return and the Hematites recovered regaining the ball back in their possession.  Ishpeming started another offensive drive with about 4 minutes left of play in the half.  Ishpeming fumbled the ball but ended up recovering to gain a yard.  Ishpeming passed the ball on their second play.  Using the I Formation the Hematites continued to bring the ball back down field.  With four minutes left of the half the Hematies had their second penality of the game.  The Hematites were able to make a first down with a great passing play.  Using their I Formation again Ishpeming continued with their offensive drive bringing the ball to the goal line.  The Hematites scored another touch down making the score 30 to 0, Ishpeming after another two point conversion.  Ishpeming kicked the ball back to Harbor beach, however with another fumble from Harbor Beach on the kick off return Ishpeming regained possession.  Ishpeming started another offensive drive.  The Pirates now had two penalities on them as well.  With a little over a minute left of the half, the Hematites lost possession of the ball as Harbor Beach intercepted the Ishpeming pass.  The Pirates started their  drive against the Hematite defense. Making small gains the Pirates were able to move the ball closer and closer to the end zone utilizing their passing and running plays.  The suspense grew as Harbor Beach got closer and closer to scoring position.  With 1 second on the clock the Pirates decided to attempt to score a field goal and was able to score putting points on the board making the score 30 to 3 at the end of the half, Ishpeming leading.

To start the half the Hematites kicked off the ball to the Pirates.  The suspense and excitment of the fans and players was filling the Superior Dome.  Harbor Beach started off the half making an 11 yard kick return.  The Pirates started their first offensive drive of the half with a passing play, getting a holding penalty called on them.  This pushed the Pirates way back for their second down.  Harbor Beach continued to make small yard gains throughout their drive, but ended up punting the ball back to the Hematites.  For their first offensive drive of the half the Hematites started on their 7 yard line after a 54 yard punt.  Ishpeming moved the ball up to their 21 yard line after a great carry.  Ishpeming continued to bring the ball down field utlizing their Wildcat formation and making great yard gains.  With another Harbor Beach penality the Hematites got to move the ball forward.  Again with their Wildcat Formation the Hematites brought the ball to ‘”first and goal” and were able to make a touchdown making the score 38 to 3 after another two point conversion and turning the game into a clock running game.  Harbor Beach began their offensive drive with another penalty but with determination they continued on and were able to get a first down.  Using a reverse option the Pirates attempted to pass however the Hematites interecepted the ball getting the ball back on their 22 yard line, making that the third turn over in the for Harbor Beach.  Using the I formation the Hematites moved the ball down field.  With under two minutes of the third quarter to play Ishpeming continued to utlize their I Formation but did not score by the end of the quarter.   The quarter ended with the score 38 to 3, Hematites lead.

The quarter started with Ishpeming bringing the ball down field.  With the clock running and the excitment building Ishpeming continued against the Pirate defense.  With 8 minutes left of the game the Hematites controlled the clock by playing conservatively.  Utilizing their I Formation the Hematites made another touchdown making their score 44 with a little over 6 minutes left of the game.  The quarter still remained a clock running game with the clock only stopping for touch downs, penalties and injuries.  Ishpeming was unable to score the two point, making the score 44 to 3.  Harbor Beach got an attempt for another offensive drive with the clock continuing to run.  With Harbor Beach utlizing their I Formation they were able to make small yard gains.  With three minutes left of the game Harbor Beach made an excellant catch from a passing play and scored a touchdown making the score 44 to 10 after the kick for the extra point.  With that score the running clock was eliminated.  The Pirates kicked the ball back to the Hematites with just a few minutes left of the game.  The Hemtites utilized the I Formation again and were able to make it close to the first down with their running play.  With the last two minutes of the game Ishpeming was able to make a first down and then started to take a knee once the clock approached a minute left of play. Wathing the clock, the Hematites took a knee on their last play of the game. The game ended with a final score of The Hematites 44 to The Pirates 10. With the win the Hematites will be going back down to Ford Field for next Saturdays game, the Championship.
