Ishpeming Friday Night on a Thursday Night – Ishpeming Hematites (46) VS Gwinn Modeltowners (0) on 98.3 WRUP 10/24/13

Ishpeming, Michigan 10/24/13 – It was a brisk 39 degrees this Thursday evening for the Ishpeming Hematites as they took on the Gwinn Modeltowners at home for their final regular game of the season. Their goal, to keep a perfect season record. To support Breast Cancer awareness tonight the Hematites wore pink camo jerseys and the officials had pink whistles and flags. Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were at the Ishpeming playgrounds this evening bringing you all the action live on 98.3 WRUP.
The game began with Ishpeming kicking off to the Modeltowners. Gwinn received the ball at the midfield and got ready to make the first offensive drive of the game. Ishpeming brought on a challenge with their tough defense against Gwinn’s Power I formation and their Wishbone formation offensive plays. Ishpeming was able to intercept the ball off of Gwinn’s first pass of the game and scored a touch down in the first 2 minutes of play. Making the score 8 to 0, Ishpeming, after the extra points. The quarter continued with Gwinn getting a second chance at an offensive drive. However, Gwinn ended up punting the ball back to Ishpeming after not being able to obtain a first down. The Hematites made a great offensive drive off of the punt bringing the ball to the one yard line for a total of a 54 yard gain on the first play. The Hematites scored another touch down on the second play making the score 16 to 0 with 7 minutes left of the first quarter. On their third offensive drive the Modeltowners were not able to move the ball very far and ended up punting the ball back to Ishpeming again. The Hematites moved forward 20 yards down field on their first play after the punt. Ishpeming continuued to push the ball down field utilizing their passing technique and different plays not usually played during their games. The Hematites scored another touch down off of a passing play making the score 24 to 0, Ishpeming after the two point conversion. The Modeltowners attempted to use the Power I formation against Ishpeming, but were only able to gain a yard at a time. Unable to achieve a first down the Modeltowners ended up punting the ball back to Ishpeming for the third time. The Hematites used the Wildcat formation to make a first down for their first offensive play after the punt. With two minutes left of the quarter the Hematites were not able to score again and the quarter ended with a score of The Hematites 24 and The Modeltowners 0.
The second quarter started with Ishpeming having the ball and scoring another touch down in the 1st minute of play, making the score 32 to 0, Hematites. The Modeltowners once again battled the Ishpeming defense, using their Wildcat formation and were not able to gain much yardage, resulting in a punt. The Hematites scored another touch down on their first play after the punt with a 50 yard touch down run, making the score 40 to 0 after the extra points. With nine minutes left of the second quarter Gwinn battled against the Hematite defense with another offensive drive. Gwinn made several attempts to push the ball forward but ended up punting the ball back to Ishpeming again. The Hematites received the punt but ended up fumbling the ball with Gwinn recovering. Gwinn pushed the ball down field gaining few yards per play, but they ended up turning the ball over to Ishpeming after a valiant try. With two minutes left of the half, the Hematites brought the ball down the field with a strong offensive drive but were not able to score another touch down by half time. The half ended with a score of Ishpeming 40 and Gwinn 0.
The second half turned the game into a clock running game with the clock only stopping for scoring plays, timeouts, injuries and such. This was Ishpeming’s eighth game out of nine with a running clock. The Modeltowners started the half by kicking the ball to Ishpeming with an on-side kick attempt. The Hematites recovered the kick and started their first offensive drive of with small yard gains each down. The Hematites were able to score on that first offensive drive making the score 46 to 0 with about nine minutes of play left. After the Hematite touch down the coaches decided on a mutual agreement to keep the clock running unless there was an injury or at the quarter end. Gwinn had to punt the ball back to Ishpeming again after their offensive attempt. With less then two minutes left of the quarter, Ishpeming was not able to move the ball. The quarter ended with a score of 46 to 0, Ishpeming.
The last quarter started with Ishpeming fumbling the ball but they were able to recover it back. The clock continued to run throughout the fourth quarter. The Hematites turned the ball over on downs to Gwinn. The Modeltowners continued to make a valiant effort against the Hematite defense, but ended up punting the ball back to Ishpeming. With five minutes left of play in the game Ishpeming took their time with each play. The Hematites ended up turning the ball over to the Modeltowners on downs with two minutes left. Gwinn used their I formation on the first play of the drive gaining 5 yards only and leaving time for only one more play. On the last play of the game, Gwinn tried the I formation again but had no gain. The game ended with a final score of 46 to 0, Ishpeming. Completing a perfect season for the Hematites.
