4th of July Parade in Ishpeming, Mich

Ishpeming, MI – July 4th, 2013 – What sets July 4th apart from other holidays, in my mind, is the lack of obligation.
You don’t have to buy presents or prepare a gourmet meal. No eggs, no religious affiliation to single out those not participating, and no snow to bury your car as you try to get to the party.
I’m not saying I don’t love the other holidays, because I do, but Independence Day is distinctly about the leisure of a summer day, about appreciating the freedoms we as Americans enjoy.
And today, we were delivered a gorgeous–dare I say perfect–summer day. The sun is beating down enough for us to forget our yooper weather woes, there are cook-outs, icy cold beers, jet skis, boats, and beaches being enjoyed across the U.P.
Don’t forget about parades! I participated in a parade for the first time today, and true to the spirit of the day, all I had to do was show up, smile, and enjoy.
Walt and Mike followed behind our WRUP Packers truck driving two John Deere lawn mowers, one of which is available to win tomorrow at the Texaco Country Showdown in Marquette in Lower Harbor (1:30pm). They both complained of vibrating bottoms at the end of the ride, as is wont to happen on a tractor, but the John Deeres were driving beautifully.
There were hundreds of flag-waving, candy-scrambling, happy campers in the crowd, and it was a pleasure to witness. Browse this picture gallery to get in on the fun.
Here’s hoping everyone a safe, fun, blessed and relaxed 4th of July.
