Gwinn, Michigan (49841) — Third grade students in Connie Sather’s Social Studies classes recently finished a book by Holling Clancy Holling titled “Paddle to the Sea” about a Native American boy who carves a wooden model of an Indian in a canoe and sets it sail through the Great Lakes into the Atlantic Ocean. Students will now set sail their own paddle, carved by Mrs. Sather’s husband, Scott, on the Escanaba River in Gwinn. At 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 31st, students will walk to the bridge by the former Gwinn Middle School to release the paddle in the river and will follow the paddle as the river cuts through Peter Nordeen Park before watching the paddle sail of town. Students will preview the paddle’s route on the Escanaba River in class, via a satellite map, beginning at 11:20 a.m. that morning.
