Humboldt Township – Vehicle vs. Moose Incident

MARQUETTE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PRESS RELEASE

BRIEF SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

Marquette County, Michigan - August 12, 2011 – 8:45a - The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a vehicle vs. moose crash which occurred on US 41 in Humboldt Township. A 2010 Chevrolet, HHR, driven by William Backus, 48, of Akron, OH was traveling east bound when a moose entered the roadway directly in front of the Backus vehicle. The vehicle struck the moose which died upon impact.

The vehicle Backus was operating was not able to be driven from the scene and was towed. Also in the Backus vehicle were two passengers Rhonda Quick, 46 and her 14 year old son both of Akron, OH. Backus received minor lacerations from the broken windshield glass and was treated at the scene.

The moose was turned over to the DNR for medical testing. All occupants of the vehicle were wearing safety belts.

Assisting at the scene was Michigan State Police, DNR Law Enforcement Division, Bell Memorial EMS, Michigamme-Spurr First Responders, Champion Twp. First Responders and Fire Dept.
