The Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball Team (39) Travels to Gwinn to Face the Modeltowners (40) on 98.3 WRUP

Gwinn, MIFebruary 1st, 2019 – After a brutally cold week and multiple game cancellation, the Ishpeming Hematites and the Gwinn Modeltowners were set to do battle. Tyler was still feeling under the weather, so Luke G. took the seat next to Bob Nadeau to bring you the game on 98.3 WRUP and streaming live at WRUP.com/Stream!

The Ishpeming Hematites got out to a fast start when they broke out to an early 3-0 lead, and they held their lead for the first several minutes of the game. Ishpeming’s lead was 6-1 as the halfway point of the first quarter neared, but a Hematites player went down hard, taking the wind out of their sails. Fouls started to come early in the game, and both coaches were forced to balance out playtime in order to prevent any players from fouling-out. Time was running out in the first quarter, and the Modeltowners took their first lead of the game at 8-6. Gwinn continued to pull away, and they held the lead at the end of one quarter.

Ishpeming Hematites: 9
Gwinn Modeltowners: 11

The Ishpeming Hematites found themselves just behind Gwinn at the start of the second, but that wouldn’t last long. Gwinn advanced their lead out to six points, and it appeared as though Ishpeming was having some trouble controlling the ball. Coach Ryan R. stated before the game that turnovers were something the Hematites needed to improve, and that became apparent when the Modeltowners had a nearly ten-point lead. Ishpeming started to fight their way back into the game late in the first half, and the Hematites trailed by three points with under one minute to play in the half.

First Half Score
Ishpeming Hematites: 18
Gwinn Modeltowners: 24

The play was back and forth in the first half, but the Ishpeming Hematites were just behind the Modeltowners to start the second. Fouls started early and came fast in the third, and that seemed to play in to Gwinn’s advantage. It was 28-18 with five minutes left in the quarter, and the Hematites were finally able to get onto the scoreboard in the second half with a beautiful three-pointer from the arch. Ishpeming’s coach was forced to use his second of three full timeouts with four minutes left after some sloppy play from the Hematites as they could sense time was running out. Madison Pruett was a bright spot for the Hematites, and she helped keep Ishpeming in the game thanks to four three-pointers in less than three quarters.

Third Quarter Score
Ishpeming Hematites: 30
Gwinn Modeltowners: 35

With only one quarter remaining, it was anyone’s game. The Ishpeming Hematites were in the double-bonus, and that allowed them to come within two points of the Modeltowners 1:30 into the fourth. Ishpeming’s Jocelynn Nyman put up a great rebound, and that tied the score up at 35-35.  Ishpeming went on a 7-0 run to start the fourth, and the Hematites could sense victory within their grasp. With exactly 4:00 left in the game, Gwinn led 38-35, but Ishpeming quickly came within one point thanks to a shot through heavy traffic. The Hematites trailed by a single point with under one minute to play, and the entire game would come down to the final seconds.
