Ishpeming, MIOctober 18, 2018 – The sun was a golden hue over the luscious green football field, certainly an omen of glorious victory for the Ishpeming Hematites. The team defeated the Bark River-Harris Broncos in their ninth game of the season, 54 – 13. After an exquisite undefeated season, this victory makes them the Westpack Iron Division champions. The week before, they triumphed over the Munising Mustangs, 48 – 6.

To start off, the Hematites won the coin flip but deferred it. Coming right out the gate, Drake Sundberg weaved through the defense into the endzone. His twin brother Gavin got the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 8 – 0 at 8:42. Shortly after, Drake scored once again and got the two-point conversion by himself bringing the numbers to 16 – 0. The offensive line was exceptional as Gavin Sundberg ran the ball to the endzone as well as achieving the two-point conversion, 24 – 0. In a spectacular display of skill, Ben Pruett recovered a fumble on a hand-off and scored an impressive touchdown, the score being 32 – 0 with no conversion. Matt Trawick also scored a touchdown with Drake Sundberg getting the two-point conversion, 40 – 0. Finally, at the tail end Braeden Arsenault barreled through a strong defensive line, bringing the score to 46 – 0. What a quarter!

The second quarter started off with a short lull until Darren Labre of the Broncos was injured and hauled off in an ambulance with a neck injury. Fortunately, there was no permanent damage but was unable to continue the game. In retribution for his fallen comrade, Colton Brunette scored a touchdown with the attempt at a two-point conversion being unsuccessful, it brought the score to 46 – 6.

The third quarter started off with a running clock, but the Broncos were determined to stop that clock in its tracks. Willy Schmitt ran a 53 yard touchdown and successfully made the kick for one point, bringing the score to 46 – 13. However, their efforts were in vain, as our buddy Gavin Sundberg ran from the 21 yard line all the way to the endzone. The two-point conversion was a success thanks to his brother Drake, the score being 54 – 13. This caused the running clock to continue until the end of the game.

Congratulations to the Hematites, this victory guarantees them a spot in the playoffs. Their next game is October 26th, so please join us at WRUP 98.3 and online at wrup.com.
