Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball team defeated by the Westwood Patriots 48-51

Westwood, MI – January 26th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Girls High School Sports Basketball team suffered their second season loss to the Westwood Patriots with a final score of 48-51.

The Ishpeming Hematites Girls took the court taking on the Westwood Patriots this evening in Westwood. The start of the game saw Westwood making the first score, however Madigan johns fired back early on to tie the game up and a fierce back and forth followed for several minutes. Westwood put up a couple more field goals, but Madigan Johns answered with a 3. The quarter ended on a score of 9-14 Westwood Patriots.

The second frame started with the Hematites on the ropes against a strong Westwood offense. The Patriots pushed their lead to 20-11 in the first couple minutes and continued their drive. Mariah Austin put in a 3 to bridge some of the point gap, and followed it up with a layup a couple plays later. The Hematites played a hard game throughout the rest of the second frame and evened out the score 24-28 Westwood.

The second half had the Hematites continue to bridge the gap with Westwood, both teams played a solid game and kept the score within 2 baskets. With 2:45 to go in the third, Mariah Austin laid in a couple free throws bridging the point gap to tie the game 34-34. The Hematites pulled ahead with a 3 point lead but Westwood put up a 3 at the end of the frame to tie the game 37-37.

the final frame of this game was a highly competitive match, both Westwood and Ishpeming went tit for tat pushing towards potential victory as they drained the clock. With a tie game of 54-54 in the closing minute of the game, The Hematites girls choked out and caused a series of fouls allowing Westwood to put up two free throws and take the lead, Mariah Austin fouled out of the game with Emma Poirier taking the court to close out the game with a final score of 48-51 Westwood Patriots.
