Boys Basketball: Ishpeming Hematites Lose to Norway Knights 68-63 – 3/2/17
Ishpeming, MI – March 2, 2017 – The Hematite faithful got one more opportunity to cheer on their seniors at home as the Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team took the court against the Norway knights in Ishpeming Thursday night. The game wrapped up the regular season for both teams.
The two teams came out ready to go right from the tip. The scoring came fast and furious. The two teams traded baskets for the first few possessions. With the game tied 4-4, Dondre Yohe scored, followed up by a Hart Holmgren basket as Ishpeming jumped out in front 8-4. Norway answered right back with 4 straight of their own to tie the ball game. With the game tied at 10, Norway’s Justin Bal hit a 3, which was immediately followed by a Dondre Yohe 3 to knot the game back up at 13 a piece. Connor Ortman scored the final 5 points of the quarter to give Norway an 18-13 lead heading into the 2nd quarter.
Ishpeming started the 2nd quarter with a bang when Mitch Uhl hit a 3 to cut the Norway lead to 18-16. The teams traded scores back and forth with Ishpeming trying to tie things up, and Norway always having an answer. Late in the 2nd quarter Norway got their biggest lead of the game when Justin Bal hit a 3 pointer to give Norway an 8 point lead. Ishpeming then went into an offensive flurry. Dawson Dauphinais scored, Jaden Tucker hit 2 straight 3’s, and then Hart Holmgren got a steal and layup just before the buzzer to send the Hematites into the locker room with a 37-35 lead.
The third quarter belonged to Ishpeming’s Hart Holmgren. He got things going with a 3 pointer to put his team up 5. Norway answered, and then Holmgren hit another 3, which was followed by a Dondre Yohe basket. With the Hematites up 8, Connor Ortman and Justin Bal each scored to get the game back to 45-41. Holmgren then responded with yet another 3 pointer, his third of the quarter. Later, after Bal hit 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 50-45, Holmgren hit his 4th 3-pointer of the quarter and was fouled. He hit the free throw to complete the rare 4-point play to give Ishpeming a 9 point lead. Norway got a couple of baskets late and Ishpeming took a 56-50 lead into the final 8 minutes.
Hart Holmgren started the 4th quarter right where he left off in the 3rd. He hit another 3 to give Ishpeming a 9 point lead. Norway then went on a 7-0 run to close the gap to 59-57. After a pair of Gavin Sundberg free throws, Norway scored 4 straight to tie the game at 61. Holmgren scored the final 2 of his 30 points to give the Hematites a 63-61 lead. But Norway closed the game hitting 7 free throws and the Hematites could not score again. Norway defeated the Hematites 68-63 to clinch a share of the Mid Peninsula Conference Championship.
With the loss, the Hematites finish the regular season 8-11 overall. They now move on to the district tournament where they take on the Gwinn Modeltowners on Wednesday, March 8th. We’ll have all the action for you on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com.
