Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball Team Defeats Manistique Emeralds 68-38

Manistique, MI- February 21, 2017- The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team would play back to back for the only time this season and it did not look like that would affect the team at all. The Hematites would get all over the Manistique Emeralds right from the get go and would never let them catch their breath.

It was a good start for the Hematites in the first quarter. You would see some different faces start for Ishpeming as they had back to back games for the only time this season. It would be the Hematites jumping out to a 13-4 lead in the quarter before Manistique raddled off 6 points to get this game close again. Ishpeming led heading into the second 16-8.

The second quarter was all Hematites as the offense was firing on all cylinders and the defense was shutting things down. Ishpeming would score 23 points in the quarter as they went on a 14-2 run in the middle of the frame. The defense would hold the Emeralds to only 9 points as Ishpeming would head into the half with a 39-17 lead.

You could say it was the worst quarter the Hematites played tonight as they just couldn’t get anything to drop in the basket. Luckily the defense held up that way Manistique would not be able to get themselves back into the game. Though the Emeralds went on an 8-0 run during the quarter, and was able to outscore Ishpeming 10-8, it was still the Hematites heading into the final quarter up 47-27.

Ishpeming looked like themselves again in the fourth frame as the would pile up the points while their defense would stand strong once again. The Hematites would add another 21 points to their total while holding Manistique to just 11. Ishpeming would only play 9 of their players tonight to give some rest to the girls who play a majority of the minutes and all 9 of those players would score a basket on the way to a 68-38 victory.
