Ishpeming Hematites Boys Basketball Falls to Norway 53-36 – 1/3/17
Norway, Michigan – January 3, 2017 – It was a hard-fought game for the Hematites on Tuesday night in Norway, where they ultimately fell to the host Knights, 53-36. The Hematites, who held a lead after the first two quarters of play, could not hold off a Norway surge in the 2nd half.
It was a battle during the first quarter between the Hematite’s own Hart Holmgren and Norway’s Connor Ortman. Both players came out ready to go and took on the majority of the scoring for their respective teams. The two traded baskets back and forth as Holmgren poured in 8 of his team’s 11 while Ortman scored 9 of his team’s 12.
The second quarter saw more balanced scoring from the Hematites and Knights. Ishpeming was able to gain the upper hand with good ball movement and big shots. The Hematites outscored Norway 11-7 in the frame to take a 3 point lead into the intermission.
The Knights came out in the 2nd half ready to go right out of the gate. Norway used suffocating pressure for all 84 feet of the court and were able to create turnovers. The Hematites ended the game with a total of 25 of them. Norway capitalized on turnovers all throughout the final 16 minutes as they turned steals into easy transition baskets. The final 8 minutes were particularly tough on the Hematites. They were not able to register their first score until there was under 2:00 left on the lock in the final quarter.
The loss drops the Hematites to 1-3 on the season. They look to bounce back Friday, January 6th when they take on L’Anse. We’ll have all the action for you on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com.
