Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball Squeaks by Westwood 43-33 – 12/29/16
Wset Ishpeming, Michigan – December 29, 2016 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team used a strong final quarter to outlast their cross-town rival Westwood Patriots on Thursday night. The Hematites win keeps them unbeaten on the young season.
The game started slow with both teams using great defense to create stops. The first points of the contest didn’t come until almost 3 minutes in when Marissa Carello scored to give the Patriots an early lead. Mariah Austin was hot in the first quarter to keep her team afloat. She scored 7 of her team’s 9 first quarter points as the Hematites trailed by 2 after one quarter.
The Hematites were able to get in more of a groove offensively in the 2nd quarter. Ishpeming hit three straight 3-pointers at the beginning of the quarter, one from Marissa Maino and two from Khora Swanson. The Hematites used their up-tempo style of play to outscore Westwood 15-9 in the 2nd quarter to take a 4-point lead into the locker rooms.
The 3rd quarter reverted back to the low-scoring style of the opening 8 minutes. Points were difficult to come by for both teams. Westwood was able to tie the game up at 26-26 with just over a minute remaining in the 3rd quarter. Madigan Johns scored the final four points for the Hematites and they took a 2-point lead into the final period.
The 4th quarter was a battle between the cross-town rivals. The Patriots tied the game at 30 to start the quarter. Ishpeming was able to score the next five, before a Marissa Carello basket cut the lead to just 3. Ishpeming got a key 3-pointer from Mariah Austin and then timely free throws as well as great defense to ice the game. The Hematites took the victory, 43-33.
