Hematite Tuesday Night – Hematites Drop Season Opener to Gladstone

Ishpeming, MichiganDecember 6, 2016 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start Tuesday night in Ishpeming. The end result was losing their season opener to the Gladstone Braves 63-43.

Gladstone was able to get off to a hot start against the Hematites which was key in getting the win to open their season.  The game started with two straight resulting in “and-1” plays to give the Braves a 6-0 lead.  Ishpeming responded with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit in half, but that proved to be the majority of their scoring in the quarter. Gladstone finished the quarter on a 9-1 run to gain a 15-4 advantage after 8 minutes of play.

That 11 point lead proved to be crucial.  For most of the rest of the game, the Hematites played evenly

with the visiting Braves.  After Gladstone built a 24-4 lead early in the 2nd quarter, the Hematites fought back. The Hematites offense started to click and shots started to fall.  The Hematites clawed back to go into halftime down 30-19.

The second half was much of the same for the host Hematites.  The Hematites offense got going but Gladstone always had an answer.  The Hematites were never able to get the deficit to single digits; the Braves always kept Ishpeming within arms reach.
