Bark River HarrisNovember 29, 2016 – It was a fast-paced clean basketball game for the most part Tuesday night in Bark River as the Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball team defeated the Bark River Harris Broncos.  Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in the UP Propane Broadcast Booth to bring you all the action on 98.3 WRUP.

One sure fire way to put yourself in great position to win a basketball game is to out-rebound and commit less turnovers than your opponent.  That is exactly what the Ishpeming Hematites did Tuesday night en route to a 55-39 victory.

The first quarter got off to a hot start with both teams running up and down the court trading baskets.

Senior guard Khora Swanson got things rolling for the Hematites as she scored the team’s first 8 points of the contest.  After Bark River took a 9-8 lead, the Hematites clamped down.  With solid defense and offense execution, Ishpeming closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to lead 15-9 after the first 8 minutes.

Bark River started off the second quarter with a bang on a Paige Welch 3-pointer to cut the Hematites lead to 3.  But again, the Hematites clamped down and went on an 8-0 run to again extend the lead.  After the teams exchanged buckets to end the quarter, the Hematites took a 27-19 lead into the intermission.

The second half was more of the same.  Every time Bark River made a run, the Hematites answered back.  The Hematites built up a 13-point lead in the 4th quarter and were on cruise-control.  Bark River was able to get themselves to the free-throw line quite a bit during one stretch to cut the lead to 6 before the Hematites regained control of the game.  With the Hematites turning aggressive and getting to the line themselves, along with some well-timed layups, the Hematites pulled away late.

There was a big crowd for the season opener!

The Hematites out-rebounded the Broncos 53-40 while also committing 7 less turnovers.  This is a great recipe for winning basketball games.  Another key factor was distributed scoring, as Ishpeming had three players score in double figures.  The Hematites were paced by Madigan Johns who tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Khora Swanson, 11 points, and Marissa Maino, 10 points, also scored in double figures.
