Hematite Thursday Night Football – Hematites Drop Season Finale 38-6 – 10/20/16

Gwinn, MichiganOctober 20, 2016 – The final game of the season did not go as the Hematites had hoped.  The Hematites (3-5) were in Gwinn Thursday night to take on the Modeltowners (6-3) in a Mid-Peninsula Conference match up. Ishpeming needed the win to keep their playoff hopes alive while the Modeltowners were looking for their first playoff berth since 1999.

It was a battle between the Master and the Apprentice.  Gwinn Head Coach, Dion Brown, is a former assistant under Ishpeming Head Coach Jeff Olson.

Gwinn got off to a quick start, or so it would seem, when Chris Bosworth took it 51 yards into the Ishpeming red zone on Gwinn’s first possession.  But as they’ve done all year, Ishpeming’s defense forced a key turnover when they recovered a Gwinn fumble on their own 2-yard line.

Pinned deep in their own territory, Ishpeming could not get anything going.  On 3rd down, the Hematites tried a jet sweep, but were tackled in the end zone, which resulted in a safety and 2 points for the Modeltowners.

Gwinn had success moving the ball on the ground throughout the game.  Gwinn added two touchdown runs before halftime to take a 16-0 lead into the locker rooms.

The Hematites struggled to move the ball on offense which put a lot of pressure on their defense.  In the second half the Modeltowners ground game proved to be too much for the Hematites.  The Modeltowners added 3 scores in the second half to build a 38-0 lead.

The Hematites ended on a high note when with 2:26 left in the game, Tanner Dellangelo ran it in for a score. The Hematites end their year with a 3-5 record.
